Eeeek...SPIDER!

First worms, then spiders. What next? Sea-mouse? I'm a goner! Am I likely to find all of my phobias in my 24G piece of heaven? I found my first zoanthid spider tonight, 3 hours after lights out. Atleast I know the most likely cause of the "wasting" of this colony, but they sure are nasty looking little buggers. It did give a satisfying crunch under that disposable bamboo skewer as I sent it off to join Schultz's 105.
I hate to be girlie, but it'll take hours of scalding showers to get the heebie jeebies off. Really, my skin is still crawling. Since there will be no sleeping tonight, I'm off to research zoa-spider removal. I'm just venting mostly, but if anyone has suggestions or experiences with removing these (as I am sure to discover more, so the literature says so far), I am all ears(eyes).

So, it's morning. No more spiders, yet. Ah yes, not really spiders. Creatures of the night...blood suckers...VAMPIRES! Oh well, sun is up, husband is up, safe to sleep. But first a water change before lights on.

I have been up at night trying to kill a gorilla crab.

I found a zoanthid spider, I thought for sure there would be more, luckily it was only one. Hopefully, it will be the same in your case,

Yeah, they are probably not like house spiders that make nests in your furniture with thousands of little babies.

Thanks for the sentiment. Good luck with the crab. I was lucky enough to find mine before it went into the tank. I try to take unwanted hitchhikers to the LFS, but I'm sure even they don't accept pests like zoa spiders. And as I said, it made a satisfying crunch!

Thanks alot-- need to scour the house now for spider nests, and sitting on that cushy couch will never be the same!

Had to google that (I don't recommend it!). Horrifying? Wikipedia says they are carnivorous and can run 10 mph! Supposedly don't eat human flesh, not volunteering to test that--LOL

Seriously I never purposely kill a non-venomous spider in my house. They eat all the other bugs and they don't bother food.

They leave the other bugs in a nice little pile in the corner for me to sweep up and I don't have to use bug spray that may harm the fish.

Symbiotic I guess.
 
Well that's a positive spin. However, since I don't trust my spider I.D. capabilities any more than I trust my reef critter I.D., I simply show spiders the door--to the great outdoors, not the great spiderweb in the sky.

Exactly what you should do. I hate people who are inhumane. Even though it is just a spider. Good for you!:)

i would strongly suggest doin a fresh water dip on this zoa colony about 1 hour after lights out as spiders live in the rock crevises and holes durring the day and come out to feed at night, also take a closer look between polyps and get tweesers ready, you need to take a very close look at polyp matting, these spiders chew a hole and live under the matting eating the flesh of polyps and seem safe from dips whilst under cover, zoas/palys grip the rock with the mat they grow so if there are any and i mean ANY gaps/holes showing id lift the mat and take a closer look underneath it.

I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS TO DO WITH ALL ZOA/PALY COLONIES YOU HAVE IN YOUR TANK ONCE A SINGLE SPIDER HAS BEEN FOUND.

now the worst bit....if you find any more spiders on any rocks i suggest you remove those rocks and put in a quaretine tank to stop any infestation to other colonies from these. they must stay in QT until completely sure no more are present.

the reason for this emergency procedure is because these spiders carry babies and once they start to spread if nowt is done they will wipeout your zoas and palys.

Wow berns! Looks like I have a date with some zoas tonight--mine is a glamorous life. That is more info than I have been able to find on the WWW . I read about Schultz's nightmare the night I found mine. Makes your heart ache--105 little beasties and counting! Under the matting? Really? Clever little devils. Also, I like your idea of removing any healthy polyps from hopeless rocks to a shallow dish floating in QT (read it at your link). Much good info, hope everyone is paying attention. p.s. what might the size of the babies be?

Yea thats a major let down also, but that camel spider was HUGE! :eek2: Yuck..
 
True, I wasn't left with blood spurting from a gaping wound! Still high on my Yuck list.

Can someone post info about using Interceptor in reefing? (Can't find anything but use in treating worms in dogs.) Have seen it referred to in 2 posts.
 
a fresh water dip should be all you need i would hold off on the interceptor as long as possible. Last resort if you know what i mean. But if you do want to know about go to the SPS page tell them you have red bugs and you want to use interceptor to treat them.

They will tell you all you need to know
