eggcrate?

I recently purchased eggcrate in Lowes, when I asked two gentlemen that work there
- Where can I find eggcrate?

they looked at me like I am lost or something. And asked me
- What the heck is an eggcrate?

I told them it is a light diffuser that used on flurecent lights. They presistently keep looking at me, like I am from another planet. But one of them decided to guide me somewhere. He showed me soooo many light diffusers, but no eggcrate. Eventually we found it. On a SKU barcode sticker it had written "Eggcrate".

...resistance is futile...

you should have told them..."all your base are belonging to us...Vulcan power!"...then walked off

Show me a picture of proper eggcrate I should use...

Look above at first picture posted by Travis Stevens.

yeah...keeping 'jumpers' in...haven't had any jumpers yet.....but am going to get my tank into a reef eventually so I don't want to block light from my coral.

ya theres other ways to keep jumpers in. If you want i could send you a pic of how i built my canopy for like 25 bucks. I'm in no way a woodworker, but 'm sure anyone who knows anything about it could do it pretty easily.

But also...yesterday i was playing with the stuff...i found that how i had it before, just sitting on top of the tank like everyone else has it..it blocks light like i said before...however, i then held it about an inch from the bulbs, and it definately did focus it more. Maybe thats where people get the idea that egg-crate focuses light? Because when you look at those lights in the stores or whatever...they never have way down from the bulb do they? Its always like 3 inches max.

However, that wont work with this, because the point of the egg-crate is to keep the fish in...and you dont want the lights so close to the water so the egg-crate is gonna be too far away from the light to do anything, in which case i found that it blocked more light.

to cut it, all i did was take a big butchers knife (cuz thats the first thing i saw :) ) and just kinda tapped on one square hard enough to where it breaks off...then once you get in a few squares, you dont need to worry about hitting others because you've now got a slot for the knife to fit in...so you're able to hit a lot harder and knock out a bunch at once. Then i just ran down the edge w/a knife after just to cut off all the loose plastic. Lots of people say to use a chisle. Is it wrong? no, but i found this way easier and much quicker than hitting it w/the chisle.

I use it on top of my tank too. I haven't noticed any difference in it blocking the light with or without the eggcrate. Steven Pro did a whole bunch of research about this not too long ago. I just cut it with a pair of dykes (wire cutters). You can use scissors or a dremel or whatever. The plastic is thin.

If I need to cut it, how would I cut that sh*t??

break it with some pliers works fine, albeit crude. It's rather brittle, but not too bad.

light expands outward there for even if it did block a millimeter of light per square the light expands outward and fills it in, no one i know of (and i know plenty that are VERY experienced reefers) would ever complain about egg crate.....infact i do believe it was the best find ever for its multi-use ability when it comes to reefkeeping......IMO if you want to make an easy top for your tank that keeps the tank from overheating with normal glass tops...get eggcrate......

I read in another that it can melt if to close to hot lights so be careful with MH. I have not experienced this personally because I do not have MH lights.

Yes, i would imagine it would/could melt under mh. It got somewhat hot under my pc's which dont even run that hot...so i'd think that if its close to the mh bulb, it'd prolly melt

It was Dana Riddle that did the research. I have just commented on it previously.

I used to keep mine 6" from 150 watt MH's without problems.
