The intake elbow at the bottom of the canister is leaking slightly. Does it have threads and screw in and out? It has always turned in order to adjust direction of the hose. Should it do that?

Thanks. I never knew it screwed completely out and just assumed it was designed to swivel, so it's always been loose! I'll screw it out and put a little plumber's tape around the threads.

Not too much tape or something has to give.

PTFE paste is a much better choice, although with the o-ring in palce and properly lubed leaking should not be an issue

Exactly. The outer edge of the o-ring seals against the cylinder wall allowing the fitting to be dialed in and out without leaking. Because Germans.
