Electrician Help Needed!

My tank is in my bedroom, the whole bedroom is on one 15 Amp breaker. I would like to take one outlet off that breaker and transfer that to a new 15 Amp breaker.

It looks like there are three spaces on my box which is aprox 6 feet from the room. I'm not sure where the power splits to the outlet that I want to take off that circuit.

Is there any electrician reefers out there that could help me out for a fair price in getting this done? How much would you estimate this costing?

I'm in Chicago, about a mile 1/2 north of Wrigley.

Not an electrician, but, I have done this myself before. I would just add a single 20 amp dedicated circuit to the box, I would run new wire and install a new GFI outlet on that circuit for the tank. I paid an electrician $20 to land the wires in the panel for me and I did all the rest.

He is right, you need to wire a new outlet directly to the breaker box, not try to split the one already in the wall. It is much simpler, and then you will have 2 separate breakers.

The GFCI outlet is a must for anything that is water-related. They cost about $10-15. Your current outlet should have one if it does not already.

If you're putting in a new outlet, is it tough to add another outlet connected to the same breaker just to have more plugs?

Pat you should have talked to me a little bit about this yesterday. I know a bit about electrical and a little bit of everything else, you need to learn if you plan to stay mexican :p

Pm me with what your thinking of doing and i should be able to go help.

No problem, if the electrician is running a new wire from a new breaker to a new outlet on the wall, he/she could easily add another outlet next to the first one, or else put in a 4-outlet box. Make sure it is GFCI.

Kinda depends what is behind the wall, is it finished? What is in the room on the other side of the wall. If it is a finished wall on both sides, then is there attic access if he has to run conduit down from above? How far from the breaker are you putting this outlet?

The wall is finished and an exterior wall, cinder block on the other side. I can't run new conduit, just need to find a new route to the breaker. The breaker is about 6 - 8 feef from the outlet.

I would trace the wires and see if they go straight from the outlet box to the breaker panel. If they do, I would just use the existing wire to pull new wires from the outlet box to the breaker box and wire in a completely new circuit.....

Make sure power is off first of course. :)

Pat, is your circuit breaker box on the exterior wall too, or is it on the other side of that hallway?

OK, this is getting off track!

Does anyone know of a good electrician that they can recommend for this job? This is not something that I feel comfortable doing as a first time electric DIY job. I'd never get a wink of sleep thinking that the place was going to burn down any minute.

NewSchool, no-one here is recommending you do this yourself, electric work is serious business. They are just chiming in with what will need to be done so you can get a proper quote and act like you know what you are talking about, and someone doesn't try to make a day-long job out of a few hour job.
If it is acceptable to you, given the location of the breaker and the outlet, an electrician would want to find out if the wire going into the current outlet comes straight from the breaker box. If it is, he would disconnect the black/white wires at both ends (the outlet and the breaker box), and then connect 2 new blacks and 2 new whites to the ends of the old ones, and pull them through the conduit. So, you now have 2 sets of wires in your conduit. At the breaker box, he connects one pair of the black/white set of the new 4 wires to the first 15 amp breaker, and the other pair to another 15 or 20 amp breaker. Down at the wall outlet, he could change that into a 4-outlet box, or (two of the normal 2-outlet boxes side-by-side) and wire the white/blacks into them. You are done! Use GFCI outlets if I didn't mention that yet.

those are all good suggestions. i dont know anyone in that area.

anyone know of a good electrician or one they are happy with on the north side for pat?

Thanks Steverino, I didn't mean to come off like I was brushing everyones advice to the side! I appreciate everyones input.

hey newschool, i am an electrician and if you can't find anyone let me know. im in arlington heights so i'd have to figure out a decent time to get out there. also a few pics might help me give you an idea as to cost, cash or frags would be accepted. if you have any open slots in your panel thats good and also how many receptacles are currently in your wall now. if it only has a single gang ring than you would have to either attach an exposed box and put on a quad, or you could split the receptacle up and have it on two different breakers. pm me if you would like my help. :)
