ive got an emerald crab hanging out by my dunkin,i just noticed that it developed a taste for the tissue, anyone seen this or know why it enjoys tasting it.the crab picked off about 4 whiskers.thanks.

My guess is he is eating algae off the tissue. I have duncans and emeralds and have never seen them get near the duncans. I suppose they might if there is nothing else for them to eat.

I had disappearing zoanthids and finally caught the culprit - emerald crab. He must have come in as a hitchhiker, and he is big now so has been around for awhile hiding in the rock work. From my reasearch, emerald crabs can start eating a variety of stuff we do not want them to eat as they get older. Not all of them do, but not a chance I will take. Now if I can just catch this crab...

Emeralds often "go rogue", or develop a taste for coral tissue. I've never heard of them changing their minds and going back to being reef safe after that.

My crab decided he liked acans last night. Thought he was going for some algae but on closer inspection he was ripping the feeders off of it (the one in my profile pic). He's now in the sump waiting for his sentence (back to the lfs). I had another that went rouge a while back. Ate two of my firefish and a snail.

I had an emerald crab take out my entire GSP population in a night. He was removed the next day...

I received an emerald crab as a hitchhiker, I have been hand feeding it a little piece of nori every other day and it hasn't touched any of my coral yet. From what I have heard, it is hit or miss when it comes to these things.

ah man now you guys got me worried. my crab sits all day in a crack in this rock and hes right below my frogspawn. ima keep an eye on him now!

Emerald craps ("P" is on purpose) are always temporary in my tank. Somewhere along the road I picked up bubble algae. Every 6 months or so I'll throw in an emerald to clean it up. As soon as it's gone, the "crap" goes with with. I've had two of them which love pulling my SPS polyps out for dinner....$8 crab vs. $65-$100 colony.....one crab got speared with sharp tweezers. Cest la vie!
