EMF, are we killing our fish?

My father has Malt Lymphoma (spelling?), a type of cancer that affects the lymph nodes. My mother was searching for reasons as to why he has this, the Medical Doctorss say they are unsure why he has it, but it is treatable. We brought him to a Natural Doctor, AKA Homeopathic, and he says it's because something that my father is around a lot is putting off too much electricity/magnetism and that is the reasons why he has the cancer and that it may be possible to cure it completely, not just put it into remission for a few years, if he gets away from what every it is that is putting the electricity/magnetism out. Well, he owns a manufacturing business and he does alot of Tig Welding and Plasma cutting and the electricity bill is always sky high. So we did some research on it and came up with this.

Other sites have also claimed to have evidence that points the causes of certain types of cancers and other illnesses to high EMFs, which stands for Elctro Magnetic Field.

We bought a meter that measures it and according to the meter and the information on the web, my room, in particular, is a death zone, Armageddon lol. I turned off my fish tank and it can barley pick up a reading. If this can affect humans, who knows what it's doing to our fish and corals!?!?!?!?!?!?!? The meter is reading the tank to be 3+ mG (the meter stops counting at 3) , when it is near the fish tank and the safe range under 2.5mG!

This is defiantly something to look into IMO.

I think a tin foil hat might reflect those pesky EMFs ;)

Sorry to hear about your dad's cancer. Hope he beats it quickly.

How did your homeopathic doctor determine that electromagnetic fields were the cause and not a scapegoat?

He used some type of meter that was developed from the university of arazona which told him what herbs would be most affective, he's also from China.

The Natural Doctor we are seeing now was able to completly heal my little brother from cerebral palsy by giving him some herbs (juice from some bug over in China!) when the medical doctors told us there was nothing they could do.

The pharmisudical comanies know there are cures for many of the "uncurable" ilnesses out there, they just don't want people to know about it because they can't put a patent on a natural acurring medicine, that means they can't make money off it. Medical Doctors are mearly the poppets of the pharmosudical companies. My little borther is proof of this.

Your in the wrong hobby if you don't trust science.

90% of all medicines are derived from natural sources. If your ignorant of the facts then you shouldn't bash something you obviously know nothing about.

I understand where he's coming from and maybe we are exposing them to too much emf's. There is a lot of mixed science in regards to emf's and it's really an unexplored topic. At this time, I wouldn't buy a house next to power lines but I don't know how far to go with it though.

He probably used ryodoraku meridian graphing unit or just a meter by placing on the source points of the meridians (usually on the finger tips) and measuring the differences. Now from that finding, the cause falls into theories but that is considered a primary on the list. So would irridated foods, microwaved foods, microwaves in general, and a whole list of other items.

I've always wondered about the sound/vibration generated by pumps and their effect on fish and invertebrate health. I can only assume that they interfere with biological processes and fish health, as they irritate me if I'm around them for a long period of time.

Just as an alpheus shrimp can irritate and confuse a would-be predator, powerheads may do the same to a lesser extent. Perhaps this is part of the cause of lateral line disease, or a growth inhibiting factor for corals.

The ocean is full of signals, but our fish may not adapt as well as we think to the constant drone of a spinning impeller, and stray electrical current (no matter how slight).

Heaters also cause harmonic distortion, although I'm not sure if this is true of titanium models.

These may all be minor stress factors, and equivalent to natural phenomena such as wave action, seismic events, or dolphins yelling at each other. If they are psychologically damaging to a fishes nature, perhaps they can be minimized by using less offensive pumps etc. I'm sure quiet external pumps like the Velocity series tread lighter.

The research linking EMF to any health risks is still hotly debated.

If I were in your shoes, I'd insist that my father see a medical specialist. Natural medicine, homeopathy, may be fun to fool around with if you have a headache or sore throat, but IMO you'd be a fool to rely on any of those to treat cancer. (Unless all other options were first ruled out.)

I wish your family the best.

Oh and btw, we met a guy in the waiting room who had cancer and the MD sent him home to die. He went to the Natural Doctor and he was completly cured, confirmed by the MDs. He was there for a check up.

Yes, I understand that cases like that happen. However, these are purely anecdotal. If you compare the number of people who've been saved by Western medicine to the number saved by any of the Eastern-accupuncture-herbalist-homeopaths, you would see that anecdotes are next to meaningless.

Best of Luck to you.

suprise suprise, sam shows up and makes a smartass comment!

The funny part is, that YOU SAM have demonstrated an utter lack of scientific understanding time after time.

Travis... best of luck to your father. Do take what Tang Salad and remember it.

There is a whole new breed of "natural doctors" that have radio shows and sell about 100 different natural products to cure everything under the sun. As a rule they don't eath meats, cheeses, dairy of any kind, wheat etc. It is turning into a multi billion dollar business. As Tang mentioned, if you start comparing the real statistics and and reality... Western Medicine spanks natural healing hands down. That does not mean that some of the ideas or treatments have some basis in reality or do work sometimes.

I suggest anybody who does not fully understand what homeopathic means... to look up the definition. One should understand that a "homeopathic" medice would only have mere molecules of the active medicine found in a normal drug...

It is good that you are at least seeing both types of doctors.

It makes me wonder, how many terminal cancer patients were miss diagnosed. Then they survived because of the misdiagnoses.

There are alot of chronic diseases, such as Diabetes. There is no cure in Eastern or Western medicine.

Snake oil is on the rise. Look around, I'm sure you have seen plenty.

BTW... I often do ponder the discomfort to the fish caused by the vibrations of pumps and the other constant and unnatural sounds and vibrations in a captive setup.

The natural doctor we are using ins't the telathon snake oil salesman some of you are referring too. He has been in practice for ober 25 years and has hundreds of success stories. Thanks's for all of you all's concerns.

What did your meter detect?

What did your meter detect?

I would not be so concerned with EMF killing fish. While stray electrical currents are adverse to aquarium life, I wasn’t aware that EMF could penetrate thick conductive materials such as salt water. Cell phones don’t work on airplanes without windows because aircraft aluminum is conductive. Standard radios don’t work between submarines because salt water is conductive.

I am more concerned with what your meter is picking up that may affect humans that live in air. What device did you have to turn off to get a normal reading?

There are hundreds of thousands of microwave, UHF, VHF, and terestrial radio signals slicing through your body every minute. That is without getting into the cosmic stuff that pelts the planet and our bodies. Think of all of the thousands of radio signals that you walk through going to the mailbox.

I am kind of curious as the the "meter" that these guys sold you. If 400w worth of simple pumps and lamps put it into the danger zone, what does it do beside the toaster or tablesaw?

Sorry... but I see this as a cottage industry fleecing people out of a LOT of money.

I agree that it's best to have both types of doctors. At the very least the homeopathic doctor can give an ill patient hope even if it may be misguided in some ways or opinions, that in itself has proven to be invaluable in many cases.

I also agree that some practical medicine has proven itself to be both useful and faulty in many cases. I think your father is doing the right thing but I would not bet so much on the EMF factor so much since it's still very unproven.
How many peopel use cellphones and why doesn't everyone have cancer? I think there's more to it than simply one single contributor.

That said I wish your father the best. I lost my best friend to brain cancer at age 31 and its hard to watch.
