Emperor Angel In An SPS Reef???

I have seen numerous shots of Emperors in reef tanks. I have heard various stories about their behavior. I was thinking of starting a Juvey Emp in my reef. I also have a Regal, Lemon Peel and Flame in there too, along with a pink tail trigger and some tangs, green chromies, a Vrolik's wrasse and two Bangai Cardinals. I have a 180 SPS tank w/ many medium to large colonies. Needless to say, have very little PE, but that is the price you pay for keeping angels.

Am I nuts, or can it work?

Let me know.

It can work or it might be an invitation to disaster. It's going to depend on the fish and what you're feeding it. Still, with SPS I think you'll probably have some success. I've heard many more stories of angels being a problem in tanks full of LPS, softies and clams than short polyp stonies. Definitely a beautiful fish and if you already have other angels might as well go all in.

Large angelfish species are fine in a SPS only tank, if you search the TOTM and reefkeeping magazine have had numerous articles about larges angels in a reef. The large species of angels seem to prefer LPS and zoas. ive personally witnessed a queen and emporer eat aiptasia, leave SPS alone and munch on zoas and acans.

I have one with sps and have no problems but she will destroy other corals like LPS and softies. oh and shrimp aren't safe either.

They seem to prefer the larger polyp corals and mainly snarf on LPS corals (especially the type that generate a slim coat when damaged). I have seen some nip at millipora acro's. You will definitely have more luck by getting a young one and keeping him heavily fed. The flame pygmies are just as likely to pick on hard corals, so you've been lucky so far. Hope that your luck holds up. :)

I wouldn't try. It's not worthy. If you have already an Angel in the system, and it's not giving you headaches, please be happy.
Most people can't be happy with what they've got.
Try control yourself and avoid the risk. It could be a nightmare!!!

Once I've got a Bellus Angel for my zoa tank and won't forget the big lost I've got. The Bellus was my dream fish! It's supposed to be one of the best Angels to keep in a reef, but eat the slow grower zoas I had. I'm still waiting for the polyps to come back, after months... it probably wouldn't stop eating all the polyps until finished with all, if I allowed to do so. I fed the pig lots of different types of food and it was beautiful and healthy!!

If your Angel try to eat some SPS polyps, the damage could help bacteria to finish the job. Also, they grow too big. You would need to feed the system and there goes more maintenance...

If you really, really want it you should try and forget this post. :)
Good luck!!

Grandis.
