Emperor Color Change

I saw another thread on this and thought I'd document my emperor's change to adult coloration.

Here he is a month ago

Here he is today. I apologize for the pic quality. Hopefully my photography skills will increase as he changes. I think this one is a little better than the first. Notice how his mouth is whitening, the yellow coloration is forming on the body and the circular patterns are starting to break up.

Excellent !

Please keep this thread going with updates !

I have a juvvie that looks like it might be starting to change... not sure, might just be wishful thinking...

Depends on the reef and the fish. From what I have read they are pretty safe in a SPS reef. Mine hasn't touched anything in my tank yet.

ObscurityKnocks - How big would you say your imperator (yeah, I'm annoying, using the scientific name) was before it changed? I absolutely love the color of my juvi, but I can't help salivating over the thought of his color change. He has such a personality that I actually named his Caesar because he rules the tank.

I bought him from LiveAquaria in March as shown on the first picture. As you can see he was already starting to change when I first got him. I would say he was about 3.5" to 4".

ObscurityKnocks- Cool thread. I have a Juvie Emperor that has grown substantially in the first two months that I have it. I purchased it from a LFS and was about 3.5 inches. Its is now around 4.5-5 inches and it is starting to show its dominance in the tank. It did mix it up with my Maj. Foxface and suffered minor injury ast month, but now is healthy and starting to get a slight yellow coloring on the upper part of his body. This fish is by far my favorite fish since i started in this hobby. I highly recommend them to other hobbyist, just keep your water clean. Also someone mentioned that they were reef safe with SPS, that for the most part is not true. They are notorious for picking at polyps and clam mantles. They are better with LPS, mostly torch, hammer, frogspawn because they are more noxious than other LPS. Good Luck with your Emperor.

Dave,
The 3rd picture above is from last night.

Jason,
I was the one mentioning SPS. Quite a few people have them in SPS tanks with no issues. I have even seen some with clams but they seem to be more prone to nip clam mantles from what I have read. As I said every fish is different and they may eat SPS. Mine so far has not touched any of my SPS or LPS.

great pics keep us updated

agree..any one know how long it takes them to make a full morph from juvenile to adult?

Well I skipped last months update because there wasn't much or a noticeable change. I can barely see a difference this month. I'll probably update every two months unless I see some sort of drastic change. Well here is a picture from today.

Has anyone had one that has ever completely transformed. I am not aware of one. They always seem to stop with a yellow blue and white hodge podge pattern and stick like that forever. Maybe something to do with their captive diet?
