emporer, queen.... third angel?

What "third" angel would you put with an emporer angel and a queen angel in an 8x2x2 tank?

The emporer is a good 6", sub adult colours. I am not sure what size to get the queen..... it will either be slightly larger (7-8") or quite alot smaller (3-4").... probably (and preferably) the latter.

So my question is, what angel would you go for?

Just looking for ideas and opinions really..........

Cheers,

Matt

I'm assuming your talking about large angels and not any type of pgymy angels correct? Also assuming there's going to be an upgrade, because neither of those two monsters wil be comfortable in a 240, especially three large angels. I'd definitely get the smaller queen. My emperor loved my smaller queen but hated my bigger gray. I think the emperor saw the gray as a threat so bullied him everywhere. Those two angels (queen and emperor) are pretty tough, I'd look into a smaller passer angel (smaller then the queen) maybe after you introduce the queen and see how the two react first, then consider a third angel, along with an upgrade! Good luck, keep us updated!

I have a 11" blue face, 10" blue ring, 8" Queen, and 6" scribbled all living together relatively peacefully. Don't get me wrong though, they do squabble once in awile bo=ut usually nothing more than tail thrashing. My Scribbled is a model citizen and that would be my choice so long as the new Queen is not much larger. I feel fortunate that my Queen is very mild mannered. My blue face has gotten more confrontational lately as it has gotten much larger. I may even sell him down the line if this pattern continues.

I think that you are going to have problems introducing any angel into your aquarium IF your emp. has been in there for awhile. But if you do, get the smaller queen, they can (more than likely) will be as mean as a passer angel, and after they get acustomed to the tank (if the emp. lets it), then it will not allow any other fish to be added, espcially not another angel. In a 240 I wouldnt go with more than 2. And you are going to need an angel that can stand up for itself with your empor. so I wouldnt do a scribbled unless it is larger than the empor.

I would go with a slightly larger mac and add the queen last. Get a 3" queen that can hide in places the other two can't get to. I have always had decent luck getting a much smaller angel to "stick". They can dart into the rocks and eventually (over the course of months sometimes) the bigger angels get sick of chasing the little guy! I'm sure you know that this plan would probably need a substantial upgrade eventually.

Another thing to think about is that Emperors are always going to try to be the "emperor" of the tank. If they aren't allowed this they wont be happy in my opinion. I have kept other angels with my Emperor before and although they learned to get along the emperor always seemed irritated. I eventually decided to let him be the lone angel in my reef and start a FOWLR for my other angels. Good Luck! :)

I think a few have misunderstood the thread, he already has the Queen and the Emp. he would like to do a 3rd Angel and wants suggestions.

I will concede that the Emperor angel is a tricky one. Of all the large angels, I have had three emporers that I could just never get to get along with the rest of my angels. They were always nasty SOB's. I am making the assumption that a sub-adult will learn better behavior. Contrary to other opinions I will stand by my pick: a Scribbled angel (6" or better) will do just fine. They are not overly aggressive and can hold their ground when confronted.

Aren't tanks with big beautiful fish just so much more interesting and appealling than reef tanks? Put a 300 gallon reef tank on one side of a room and a 300 gallon F/O tank on the other. Which tank will get the most attention? I have had salads that look better than reefs. ( I hope the reef police don't come after me).

That's personal opinion. Most random strangers don't understand the subtle beauty of a reef and go straight for the big fish.

That said, I find FO/FOWLR tanks incredibly boring.

You are sort of half correct :D

I have the Emporer. If the plan goes ahead, then angel no.2 will be a queen. But if I am going to start down the road of uncertainties, I may was well go at it full throttle as it were, and include a third angel. which is what I am looking for suggestions for....... meanwhile however, any and all opinions, even if they are marginally off topic as it were, are all great appreciated and read with interest.

The third fish - well I like pretty much all the angels, which makes the decision easy in one way, and hard in another...... easy because surely out of the dozen or so readily avialble species, I sould be able to find something suitable..... difficult - well, when there are so many to choose from, its hard to pick just one :)

Is there an upgrade on the way..... well not for the foreseeable future..... but 3 yrs ago I did not think I would have an 8x2x2, but circumstances change, and I have been in the hobby long enough to know that planning anything, or buying anything with a possible upgrade as the end goal, is really only a fools folly. I am looking at the medium term at this point, the next 2-3yrs..... I feel my tank has the capacity for my prospective choices in that time period. If in 3yrs time I still have the fish, I will then upgrade, if I need to. The spot where my tank is now could easily take a bigger tank..... but in the interim, anything could happen...... 3 yrs time I might not have any tank..... I could have moved, I could get fired from work, my wife could had triplets, I might get bitten by the "reef" bug and revert to small fishes...... anything could happen..... all I know right now is that I fancy a couple more angels, I have the "pedigree" as it were (i.e. experience and knowledge to keep them), I have researched it HEAVILY and discussed it with people such as ccampbell57 that are keeping multiple large angels SUCESSFULLY. There are alot of people out there keeping single angels, and fialing miserably, with emporer angels only half completing their colour change, and blue face angels growing half an inch a year, with washed out colours and constantly suseptible to ich etc. and then there are people such as ccambell57 with big, healthy fish with strong colours and are growing well....... this is not a pitch for advcating multiple large angels, nor is it suggesting that everyone should run out and buy a angel for a 90 gal tank using my "you never know what the future holds" reasoning....... one must rememeber here that I am starting out with a 240 gal tank (8x2x2) which is not the largest of tanks by any means, but it is allot bigger than most people contemplating keeping an angel fish have ;) ......

Thanks for all the input.

Cheers,

Matt

My first choice would be a Red Sea Regal, Pygoplites diacanthus, but I'm not sure that they are fiery enough to keep up with the other two. Second choice for me, Chaetodontoplus duboulayi or a Holocanthus passer, though many people think they are plain, one of my favorites though.

I would say the passer is my third favourite angel, after the emporer and queen...... :D

Its just a couple of folks I know tell me they grow very quickly, and get spitefully aggressive very quickly also...... regardless of the size they are bought, the tank they are in, or their tank mates.......

Too much royalty in one tank?

I have heard similar rumors. However, I can't say that I've heard much better about the queens..... ::grin::

If it were my tank and under your circumstances, (and like you I have the angel bug as well again which is what my wife wanted to here AGAIN), I would do a queen slightly smaller, and later do a passer or french about the same size as the queen. Or introduce #2 and #3 angel at the same time, it would help confuse the empor. and keep you from having to go through aggression issues again.

If you must mix angels adding 2 at the same time might not be such a bad idea. Like 2dawg said it will stop the emperor from focusing on kicking just one angels a** and splitting the beatings in half!

Just ensure that your tank is ready for the extra bio-load, also extra feedings will help curve aggression. But if all else fails do what I do, just pound on the side of the tank every minute or so and just scare the h@ll out of everything, that way they all feel threatened.

thanks for the input guys......

to be honest, at the outset, I would be more worried about the tangs bullying the new additions, particularly my powder blue and pruple. To be heonst, I think the emperor won't see them as a threat, and as long as they submit, I don;t think he will give them too hard of a time....... its down the line, when they start catching up in terms of growth...... and they are comaprable in size...... thats my biggest concern.... and is probably why I am aprehensive about a passer..... I know a queen "can" be as aggressive, but the passer "will" be very aggressive, and they have a reputation for taking on anything, regardless of size...... which is not a good thing as far as the emporer goes, becuse he is pretty easy going so long as subordinates toe the line.....

Bingo! Couldn't have said this better myself!

I think both are works of art, but when you combine them you have a masterpiece!
