Encursting Montipora

I was given a frag of Superman Monti and Rainbow Monti that have browned out, the person I received them from told me that they may have browned out from the salinity being off and rust getting into the water. I would like to know what I should do to help them recover. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

rust being in the water? That's a new one for me... not saying it isn't true, just never heard it before..

color = stability of parameters, light and flow...

Some corals take a really long time to color-up and go poo-brown at the drop of a hat... others are more forgiving...

Keep a stable system, good water changes for trace elements, and you'll have bust-out color... IMO anyhow.

Yes, it's possible to regain the color. Sometimes they brown out because of light acclimation issues. I try to start off my new arrivals at the bottom of my tank, then slowly work their placement higher in the subsequent weeks.

here is a pic of the rainbow monti, it looked much more brown under his halides compared to my LEDs.

If you run GFO it's always in the water :lmao:

Really ?
Can you explain that a little bit more ?
I have never used GFO but considered it many times, Just curious if this is a good thing or not.

Jarred1, sorry to take this of topic a bit, was just curious about the rust thing.
Is that a picture of the Monti in your tank ?... It dosn't look browned out... that has great potential !

Thanks
Cam

GFO = granulated ferric oxide.. basically rust. It won't dissolve in water (elemental iron is very insoluble in saltwater), but technically the media is sitting in the water haha.

Some people have experienced episodes of RTNing of their SPS and some clam irritation when they run GFO. The general consensus is that if you rinse the media well and keep GFO dust from entering the DT there's no issue.

Thank you, That's why I love this site... I am always learning. I am mostly SPS and I am getting a clam this week.... Now I know to rinse

+1 for rust reactor!

I also find flow a key rejuvenator of color. I've helped corals which had lost color regain their splendor by putting them in higher flow areas. I've had some go from brown to beauty in a month or two and others take over a year.

Interesting observation.. Any particular consistancies such as millipora and other long polyp spas color in flow, or skeletal structures that are dense color in flow... Very neat

Hi everyone, jarred got the corals from me. i gave him a rainbow monti and a superman, which were definitely browned out. most of my acros are doing fine, but i have noticed a decline in most of my montipora, specifically encrusting ones, so i gave them to him rather than let them die. I believe my problems were caused by the following:2x 250w pheonix 14k being 5 inches off the water, return line dripping water over a metal clamp which had some rust deposits in it back into the sump, salinity @ 1.023, ph @ 7.7, alk @ 7 dkh.
solutions: hung light over tank today, now 10 inches off of water. salinity is slowly being raised. ph is now 8.2. metal clamp was replaced with heavy duty pull ties. alk is 8 dkh.
already i have see a major improvement in my coral. I should have just sent this in pm to jarred but i hope this will be lesson for people with similar problems. btw, that monti looks much better under your led's lol. sorry about this long speech i have a feeling those monti's will make a turn around though.

I didn't seen any pest on them, they are looking better everyday. There is more polyp extension on both of the corals and I can now see all of the polyps, when I first got them some of the polyps never came out.
