Episode III of "The Lazy Reefkeeper" series (RO/DI for Dummies)

could you show us a little more about your ReefRelief AATOC?? Like where you have the floatswtiches, how exactly it hooks up to your RO/DI...

Sir... I'm going to have to ask for your membership card to the LBA (lazy bastards of america)... no truely lazy person would go through that much work, just to have a water tap at the head of their bed...

A truely lazy person would dream about it... probably even go out and buy the parts... but would never EVER take the time to install it as it would take too much effort and time.

As such, you are hereby barred from all lazy gatherings (which never occur because no one ever plans them) and meetings (again which never occur.)

ok thank you very much.

Sometimes you have to do work to achieve maximum laziness

Aaaahhh, Young Jedi underestimate his Master, he does...
True Lazy of Laziest, I am...
Make Wife crawl under house to hookup drain pipe, I did...
:D

(LRK yelling down into crawl space)
"Do...or Do Not...There is no Try" HhhhmmmMMM! :strooper:

Lazy Reef Keeper you are definitely my hero. Now in order to be as lazy as you, how much would you charge to come to St. Louis and plumb my system for me so that I could follow the one true path to enlighted laziness? Oh and I guess your wife would have to come as well to do the actual work!

Ahhhh, too easy, that is

Two first-class plane tickets and some BBQ ribs!

Power of the Stomach too great to resist, it is...
follow your instincts you must. HhhmmmMMM!

14 ppm of lead!?! That's pretty high. The US Federal limit for lead in drinking water is 15 ppb. Yes, 15 parts per billion. I am a little fuzzy on the differences between RO water and Demin water, but I think any water with 14ppm of ANYTHING in it isn't going to be considered RO water.

And yes, the more purified the water is, the more corrosive it becomes. Demin water is quite the big pain in the butt to deal with when you're trying to design piping systems to move it around.

Remember, while there is no "universal solvent" (an acid that dissolves anything and everything), water is the liquid that comes the closest.

Another good installment!.... What's next?

I may have misinterpreted the diagrams on the first page, but -- in the same vein (DI water is somewhat corrosive) -- normally you would store RO water in the storage tank, and then pump it through the DI cartridge on its way out of the tank. THe first diagram you posted seems to be the wrong way round

Yea, I liked the "simplicity" of the first diagram showing a very basic RO system...that is why I used it. Then I clarified it later in the last diagram that the tank should be plumbed just before the DI filtration.

I am going to convert back to plastic fittings for post DI plumbing, and then divert RO-only water going to the drinking water system/hard plumbing. I should have done this in the first place...it is a waste of DI resin to tap drinking water use out of the DI output. RO-only water is less than 10ppm which is more than adequate for drinking water use. The DI water will go to zone II exclusively, with only stainless steel braided lines (rubber lined) and no brass. Just to be safe

so how are the pics of the AATOC comin along. ;)

Here ya go.
The ReefRelief unit hooks directly to the RO/DI system via plastic water line just like any other output. It has worked wonders for me over the past year and a half...especially while on vacations.

The dual floats straddle a convenient spot directly centered over the middle pump compartment.
The Kent Float Valve is drilled into the center baffle of the left baffle assembly (separating skimmer compartment from pump compartment)

I don't think i will be able to use a AATOC. My RO/DI kit will be in my laundry room, and my tanks are on the other side of the house. I am trying to figure out how to easily get RO water to the other side of the house, without doing anything real permenant. Any suggestions?

Distance is really not an issue. You only have to be creative as to where to route the water line. Remember, it is mearly 1/4" in diameter so you'd be surprised how easy it is to route through the backside of cabinets and through walls with just a small hole drilled through.

It is even smaller than the cable for your television. So if a big, smelly, hairy guy wearing a hard hat and faded coveralls can string a wire that connects the telephone pole outside with the back of your bedroom television, then I think you can successfully route a little 1/4" water line somewhere. :p

Do you have a link to the AATOC ?

Here ya go:

I may run it through the attic. That's the only way I could do it.

But I was thinking...If I got a pressure tank, and filled it up. Would i be able to detach it from the rest of the unit and make a little caddy like you did, and just roll it to the tanks and just use the pressure of the tank to do a top off. Do you think that would work?

LRK, your posts are the best.

I have one question on splitting the tank output.
I have a six stage unit and a tank. the RO water sits in the tank, then goes through the DI filter. How do you split the water from the tank for drinking use and DI filter reef tank use?

I love the tap on your headboard it made me laugh :)

ReefMeister2,

Thanks for the link. Do you have to use a RO holding tank or can it but used without. I have a RO tank but I would prefer to use it without.
