ethical way to put a fish to sleep?

For those into the chopping the heads off, I've tried this once and it's not very easy to do!

You place the fish on a board and if it flops around, there's gonna be some sumarai accuracy in your cut else you might cut it at the belly - not a good sight with all the guts spilling out and the head twitching before it goes...not a good sight especially since it's your pet - speaking from experience there. :)

If the fish is eating, that's a good sign, but I think for these type of disease, you need to starve it - after a few days you feed it again (trying soaking food in garlic - it may help too). Also from the pix, looks like it's got dropsy and some type of infection on it's back. Multiple ailments usually = death.

ice water. get cup of water, throw in alot of ice cubes and drop it in. it will pass fast.

Won't work for goldfish. They are cold water fish. My pond used to get down to 30-35F and in the morning the goldfish were still swimming around and begging for food.

Nor will flushing work for a FW fish and is misery for a SW fish. They live a LONG time until they hit the water treatment plant. Ugh. What a way to go.

Yinger and GF... Tough crowd isn't it? :( Hope it get's better. I know how my wife feels when one of her Bettas is on it's way out, the $1.99 price makes no difference. She has three and feeds them more regularly then she feeds me.

Nicole, you're so good at tuning some of this stuff out and helping.

haha, my gf is the same way... she can't stand to see ANY animal suffer. If we see a dog wandering around, she'll make me stop so we can pick it up and call the owner haha.

I don't know about Goldfish Tuberculosis, but the human variety is not affected by sulfa based antibiotics.

Human treatment usually consists of

Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide, Rifampin, or Streptomyacin.

The antibiotics weren't for tuberculosis. I don't think GF tuberculosis is curable.

Steve, you didn't see the post before I went back and edited it. :p I had stayed up almost all night trying to nurse this poor pipefish and lost him anyway, so I was in no mood for a snotty tirade about what is a worthwhile life and what isn't.

For the curious: briefly, it was a treatise on taking responsibility, leaving the hobby if one couldn't, and I questioned how much his mother paid for him, and whether or not his life's value had anything to do with that price. :eek2:

Any time someone starts a statement by saying "don't take this the wrong way...," "don't be offended, but..." or "no disrespect, but...," the only thing 100% for sure is that the intent was to be taken the wrong way, to offend or to be disrespectful.

I would have flushed it too,BEFORE I found facts like this out.

Regardless if it's a $2 goldfish or a $3K dog, you should have some sense of compassion. We are not supposed to be savages towards other living creatures.I'm not some tree hugger that avoids stepping on ants that are on the sidewalk but if you can prevent needless suffering or discomfort even with a goldfish, why wouldn't you?
