Euro-Reef Eheim NW Thread

I have heard a local reefer's RS180. It was pretty quiet. Actually, I couldn't hear it all.

I think running them in sump makes a big difference sound wise.

I think your right. My dual external (RC) SP4 pumps sound like they are making pop-corn with the air being chopped up in them. Very annoying. Is this typical? If not solutions I should look at?

Can I get the new impeller for my SP4?

Will these fit the Sedra pump as well that ASM uses?

Rich, you need silencers. I posted this backl on page 5. Here is the info again. This WILL solve the problem. I am very, very happy with the noise reduction of that awful slurp!

OK, here is the silencer build:

1. 4" 1/2" thin wall Sch 20 PVC pipe.

2. Two 1/2" caps

3. Two pieces of rigid air line tubing. I used the black stuff sold for lawn watering.

Drill hole in endcap to accomodate the tubing.

It is SILENT !!!!

I tested the air draw. It seems to reduce the air flow by maybe 1/2lpm. It also stabilizes the bouncing of the flowmeter ball. It actually allows for more air into the skimmer, because before I was using the air tap to restrict the airflow down to about 12lpm to quiet the sucker down.

This thing cost about $1.20 to make. I think ER should make and sell these with there skimmers. It would look cool in the grey pvc!!!

Scott - thanks for the pics. I have seen that before. I didn't think the sound was slurping but more of the air being chopped in the pump by the needle wheel.

I'll try it. Should I build two of them or do you think two pumps could share a larger unit?

Any thoughts on adding cotton to filter the air? My last skimmer with becketts had air filters to muffle the sound and the cotton really clogged up with dust over 2 weeks (its not a dusty room).

Yes.

ER sells the impellers with pinwheel for $49 for all models. I bought one for the Eheim 1260 Cerreta mod pump today.

When you order be sure to request the new pinwheel design.

Also, they no longer sell just the pinwheels. They only sell whole impeller assemblies.

I just checked out the website. I am not so sure that the CS series is going away. There are many references to it on other pages. I think maybe the web update is not complete. The CS has only been around for a couple years and it offers the great weld technique that is not employed with the RS series. I would hate to see these go away.

Not sure. I seem to recall a post from ER awhile back that the CS would be discontinued. The rest of the website has not been updated. To me, the RS is identical in specs and performance to the CS for a fraction of the price, I cant see them being very popular.

The CS has the nice hot-weld technique that is also employed by H&S. Its a quality issue that far exceeds the crappy glue welds that Deltec uses. I can't believe what they charge.

I have heard the RS woudl go away. Maybe the RS will be replaced with the VS. Who knows. (not a question)
Cheers

Yes, I had this problem too. It will go away with the silencer. No need for cotton, it works fine without it.

I know that two small silencers like this will work. Not sure if a single larger will, but in theory it should. Let us know if yo decide to try it.

Just call them to place an order. It's not on the site yet. I believe they will sell it to you. I own a ER skimmer but I have discussed my DIY projects with them and they seem to support it. Give it a try.

I know their website and manuals stress registering the products, but they seem friendly on the issue of selling to all hobbyists.

Thanks sjm.

I wonder if you can order an RC250 with the sp5? It would make more sense.

I've actually been thinking of geting a custom RC250 done. 32" tall with 2 ehiems.....

We'll see after I check on a price....

Jim

When H&S requires a stronger pump than the Eheim 1260, they go the Aquabee 5000.

No update on the RC-1000 yet. I was visting last night and the sump still hasn't been plumbed.

The last I heard was that the Aquabee 5000 hasn't been balanced with USA current, so not necessarily as strong as it should be just yet.

Has anyone with a Euro-eheim tried adjusting the air valves? I know they say set the Deltecs at 2:00 and that restricting the air actually pulls more air. I have mine set as close to 2:00 as I can get until the pump chatters and then I back it of. Wide open it makes real wet foam that doesn't collect together as well. Restricted it looks more like shaving cream. After 24hrs it pulled half an inch of greenish skimate. I dumped it and am now trying with the air restricted a bit. We'll see tomorrow what happens.

henson, I removed the air valve and put a silencer on it. The silencer runs wide open. There is no chatter like before and I only lost 1lpm of air flow. You may want to try this. I also observe a lot of bounce in the air draw with the valve on and wide open. The bounce nearly stopped with the silencer. It does something on the side of magical to regulate the air entry into the pump. It is very smooth indeed.

My skimmate rocks! I am very pleased.

BTW - The Beta pictures on the EuroReef site for the RC-500 still show dual SP3 pumps. http://www.euro-reef.com/betatest.shtml

I think that's my skimmer you're looking at (the Beta pictures). Note how the pumps are aligned closely together, that was at my request to fit the shape of my sump.

When the Beta test started last year, they were calling them SP3. Later, when they were replaced by an improved pump (fixing some of those early rust problems), they were called SP4s on my invoice. I don't think the page ever got updated.

I'm presuming that these Eheims use the same in/out spacing on the skimmer - a drop-in replacement for the sp4? If so, I'll probably just wait and spring for the Eheims when the current pumps die. The real question is, how much of a performance increase does the new impeller buy you? I think I already have more skimmer than my tank's bioload demands...lol.

You're right Jeff, the eheims should fit right on your skimmer.

Sweet AT in your avatar. How long have you had it for?

Jim

We've had him for a litle over a year, and he's grown from 3" to almost 6" in that time.

That blueface you have is amazing as well....I was susprised at how much dark skimmate you were pulling, then I saw that guy in your tank. :D

Whats funny is I had a miniatus grouper in there before I moved my tank. It was a pig. My skimmate dramatically reduced when I was forced to sell it to a local reefer.

For my next tank, I want to get an AT. The are simply amazing fish.

Cheers,

Jim
