Euro reef skimmer ???

Would like the opinion of the masses. I'm running a euroreef 8-2 skimmer that has been modded with a Sedra 9000 on around 210 gallon total water volume, my question is should I replace the broken Sedra pump, replace with a different pump or replace the whole skimmer?

Go with the eheim pump imo. Euroreef skimmers are a great skimmer, no need to change. If you want to change, look at the lifereef skimmers

What's in the reef ?

Hard to recommend a skimmer without some idea of the bio load.

I've still got a Euroreef 6-2 that I can't seem to part with because it's a great skimmer but any of the venturi / needlewheel combo skimmers put it to shame.

Less power to run, near silent, far more effective. For example JNS, available here or rebrandded as Aquamax here.

I've run them all in 40+ years in the hobby. Euroreefs were one of the best, lost of other options today.

Medium to heavy bio load in tank 2 tangs,2 clowns,2 chromis,2 damsels. A few softies and LPS corals couple hardy sps and a Haddon carpet nem. I have always heard good things about the euroreefs and this one worked great till the pump quit

Those were good skimmers. If I'm not mistaken the 8-2 stands for 8" diameter and 2' tall. I had An rs 135 and loved it but when I switched to an aquamaxx em 200 it blew it away. If budget allows I'd upgrade. A cone co-3 would be a really nice upgrade.

Yes you are correct it's 8x 24

I have Euro Reef RS 100 skimmer.....which fits perfect in my sump....as I don't have much room if I decide to replace it.

My reef tank is 10 yrs old and I purchased this skimmer from the onset. I have gone thru 4 sedra replacement pumps over the years....which I'm not sure if that's expected or not.....running it 24/7 for 10 years.....seems reasonable to have to replace the motor occasionally.

I have 150 gallon tank and 35 gallon sump. 15 Fish, 120+ lbs of live rock, mostly mushrooms, zoo's, inverts, etc. May want to get some SPS-LPS in the near future.

I have nothing to compare my skimmer with since I have never used another one. I like that it is plug and play....I never have to adjust anything.

It is now being held together with silicone caulk. The bottom of the skimmer unit just fell off recently while cleaning, the side pvc pipe discharge broke off where it meets the acrylic cuz I dropped it, the top & bottom of the collection cup fell off while cleaning. I "glued" them all back together using silicone caulk and it seems to be working fine.

But I sometimes wonder if technology over the past 10 years has developed enough to make my skimmer obsolete and I should consider a replacement. I really don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for something I already have for only a little improvement. I would prefer to spend $$$ on new LED lighting that will save me $$$ in electricity and bulb replacement.

Thoughts....Suggestions? Skimmers I should consider that aren't expensive and need constant adjusting....meaning I don't need/want the Ferrari of skimmers....I like quality at a value price.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I think I might try to make my current skimmer into a recirculating style and see if it makes it better.I have nothing to lose right now and it will be cheaper than buying a new or used skimmer big enough for my tank

Euro reef/ reef dynamics made awesome stuff. However those old Sandra pumps sucked.... They were noisy, usually have a short life and do not have the ideal air to water mix.

If it was me I would modify this over one of the cheap Jan's/aqua max skimmers. Ideally get a eheim NW pump and recirc the thing. I did that to my rs12-2 and it was a HUGE improvement in performance. Skimmer was more stable, Much easier to dial in and just pulled out more of the nasty stuff. Unfortunately the pumps aren't cheap, not even sure they are still available.

Regardless of your options it sounds like you need A new skimmer. You could just replace it with the current model of the same one you have but depending on your params if you want to keep sps you should invest in a quality skimmer. Like MOST things in reefing your costly investment now will save you time, aggrevation, and more money in the future.

Euro Reef went out of business...so I can't buy the same one again :(

Mine still works! I empty the collection cup every week full....sometimes more often. I just don't have personal experience with another skimmer to know if buying a new would be worth the investment and make a difference.

MOST things in reefing are expensive and over priced!! Not all...but most. If you do your research you usually can find a deal that works just as good.

Jeff is running coral reef aquarium supply and does have skimmer modded eheim pumps on his website for sale for skimmers. Don't know if those would work, might be worth calling him.

Thats a great suggestion Viggen thanks for your input, I know the skimmer is good and worked flawlessly until towards the end of the pump life then it was real finicky and would overflow one day and no skimmate the next.

A Tunze 9420 will also work more expensive pump cheaper impellers the Sicce Syncra 1000 cheaper pump more expensive impellers. And yes I have put the tunze on my er 180 skimmer. If Jack will chime in he has done the recirulating mod on his Vertex (clone of RD skimmers) with a bubble plate.

Thanks moondoggy that would be great if he chimes in, I've been reading numerous articles about the recirc mod and I think its the cheapest way out right now to make an amazing skimmer

Does anyone run the Sicce PSK 1000 pump that can chime in on their experiences????
I found a good deal on them but not sure how they compare to the larger Sedra pumps as GPH and LPH of air. Thanks again for everyone's help!!!!!!

The psk 1000 is a tad small for that skimmer. It pulls about 720 lph of air and around 380 gph of water. You'd need a bigger pump for an 8-2

Oh man, when I had my first big tank about 10 years ago, a 120g+20g sump, I was running that exact ER 8-2 with Sedra 9000. My tank was mostly SPS and some LPS, with about 15 fishes or so, pretty heavy bioload. Fantastic skimmer. It should be easy enough to either replace the feed pump, or just go and do recirc as suggested. Super straight forward skimmers, so not complicated to fix or mod. As long as you have your gate valve set up for the return, you should be golden.

I've almost bought a 12-2 with eheim pumps that someone had for sale locally here for a steal, just to stick into storage for that day that I move out of NYC and trade in my 29g for a 300g.... /daydreaming

Correction. Just thought about this post. The psk 1000 does way better than what I said above. It would actually work for an 8-2 well. My mistake. Been awhile since I changed pumps on a skimmer. The psk 1000 actually replaced the 2500 and us a better overall pump. It actually pulls over 1000 gph.
