When the pump pulls too much air in it will actuall stop running.

Just to add a little to above....

cavitating is when an air pocket surrounds the impeller, making a cavity of air. The impeller just spins in this pocket no longer pulling water. This can ruin a pump because it has no water to cool the impeller/pump assembly.

anyone ever measure the improvement in air intake after drilling the venturi?

if ers sedra 5000 pulls in 660lph (their figure), what will it do after the "mod"?

I never thought it made a difference the boring was to make sure it was clean and had no blockage. Some venturis had small blockages. But I never really saw an air improvement.

The reason why i ask is because i have done it where i have stuck some airline down the intake and it has greatly improved performance. The pump still pumps water as usual, but you can tell there's definately more air in the chamber. I just cleaned my cup today and i will monitor the skimmate for this week. I have some pics that i can show when i have a chance. I hear what you guys said about it cavitating, but it doesn't seem anywhere near doing this.

Hey guys,

I just broke my pump on my RC8-2. I need to replace it quickly and ER isn't answering the phone. What kind of pump is on this sucker? Is there a better option? Help!?

tried again today i have pulled the valve off of the airline, and after 30 minutes it finally overflowed again...im sorta running out of ideas here

had a friend come by and he said its setup right, but ive dumped out 5 cups of that water crap just incase there is something in the water column, but he sorta agreed that it would have been out, i packed the rena xp3 full of carbon, and ran it for almost 48 hours.

jmoney - you use any aquastick type putty that will make it go NUTZ for quite a while? meds? oily foods??

no, and i havent touched the water with my hands in 24 hours, i feed omega pellets, not even 1 pinch a day, and half a cube of omega brine shrimp, the cup was cleaned by water only and has only been used on this aquarium that i drop the cube in to dissolve before releaseing into the tank

im taking the skimmer back to the lfs to see if maybe im just an idiot and havent set up something right, but from photos so far i have gathered mine is fine

Is the airline clean and not restricting? I had some salt creep plug the line and cause my skimmer to over fill once.

yep, i have found that my hydromter is a pos, i took some water to the store about 30 min ago since the skimmer works fine at the store, and sure enough the salinity is way to high 1.028, right now ive gotten it dropped down to 1.024 but im taking it slow

I run an RC180 on my 125 + 50 gallon sump/fuge. Works great IMO.

nah i would get one but right now im sorta low on cash im just gonna keep taking a water sample up to the lfs twice a day until i get the water right
