Put me in the club...I got a used ES5-2 from a friend for $110 after he upgraded to a bigger Euro-Reef skimmer. The pump is only 2 months old. What a deal!

Hello all ~ why would some es5-2 skimmers have a dolphin pump on it ?
I thought the euros use SEDRA KSP3500 ?
Is one better than the other ?Thanks ~

In the now defunct ER Forum, ER addressed that the two pumps were basically the same pump and some of their skimmers went out with the dolphin. Iif memory serves me correctly, because of a pump inventory/manufacurting issue.

Hi everyone,

Well put me in the club too :)

I just picked up a 180g system and I now have a CS8-5 Eurreef skimmer.

The skimmer is working great, just had to put a 100 micron filter bag on it to get rid of all the extra bubbles :)

so what is the deal with the new beta pumps? I know they are supposed to inject more air and all that, but when are they going to be available?

i got a brand new cs5-2 for my 10g acro tank,
how's that for oversized?
anyway, it's been about 5 days now scince i dropped it in
my sump and still no foam. it almost looks like it's working
in fresh water or something. so much so that it made me
check my salinity(1.022), i even did a partial water change
and increased salinity to 1.025, just to be safe. i also took
it out and gave it a hot water bath , but it's been 2 days
scince then. also, i noticed that when i first put it in the sump
it actually was overflowing it was foaming so much, but
then it stopped. i put in a bag of of chemi-pure in the
sump, could that have stopped foam production?
i bought an es5-2 a while ago and it was foaming in a matter
of hours, even with chemi-pure in the sump.
am i missing something??

whenever i add something to the tank, ANYTHING, the skimmer goes nuts or foam production stops. why dont you take the chemi pure out and let it go for a day. Also, keep you hands out of the water as that will decrease foam production. :) My two cents.

thanks for the reply, i did in fact take out the chemi-pure when i gave the skimmer it's bath, so i'll just have to wait.
btw, how would i know if i received one of the newer pumps with my euroreef? it does have one of the new quick disconnects on the neck instead of the union, and the pump doent say sedra or dolphin on it, it just has a number on a sticker with a euroreef logo on it, thats it. it looks pretty much the same. it does seem like theres an extra vinyl washer on the impeller.
i also took the elbow off of the pump output and plugged it straight into the body, i heard you can get as much as 25%
increase in efficency that way.

I don't know about it being a new pump. I emailed H2OTropicals about getting the new beta pump on a CS5-3 and they said it wasn't an option. The new pump's only for the larger skimmers.

Are there new ER skimmers with Quick Disconnects for the collection cup? Is there a kit available to retrofit older ER skimmers with this mod?

The only way I see them doing that is if you actually sent the skimmer back in and let them chop it up and put the new union on, but that just seems like a hassle and they'd probably charge big bucks for it. :(

Of course, I don't really know. Hehe

Peace,
John H.

yeah i really like having the quick disconnect, SO much better!!
the bubble size finally went down and now the foam is almost making it to the top ,so ,not much longer now:rollface:
i suspect that whatever they do differently in the cs series from the es series probably leaves more residue from manufacturing,
because its been over a week now and no skimmate. my
es5-2 was skimming in 24 hrs, not that i want to go back to it.:)

In regard to the gate valve mod, Does it matter if I didnt do it with a tee, just 2 elbows? Does it matter if the out take is under water or not?

Hello all~
I just got my es5-2 running in my sump today !

Is it normal for the return to be fizzing with bubbles ??

In my set up the skimmer is very finicky regarding the water level in the sump. If the out take it not under the water the collection cup immediately over flows; But, if the out take is submerged too deep under the water line, that too will cause the collection cup to immediately over flow. I have to keep a careful eye on the water level (I don't have an auto topoff), to make sure the out take is submerged about one inch under the water line.

Also, in regards to the Tee or a 90 degree in it's stead, I had to cap my tee to prevent it from overflowing the collection cup too... And, a friend of mine is using his with two 90-degree elbows and it's running just fine.

Hope that helps.
