I am thinking of converting my CS6-1 to a recirculating skimmer. My plan is to add a couple more uniseals for the pump intake and the feed pump but keep it in-sump. Hopefully this will get me by until I can buy a larger skimmer. There are just too many other things that I could spend money on right now, like that grow-out tank I keep wanting to add, calcium reactor, more frags etc. It would be nice to get hold of one of the new impellers as well.

ER CS8-1 Question on collection cup and configuration

ER CS8-1 Question on collection cup and configuration

I just received my CS8-1 and I have 2 questions (I posted this on another thread and then realized this may be a better place for help on this):

1. The gray top cover to the collection cup is just resting on top of the cup - it is not physically attached (glued or welded) - you can lift it right off the cup - is this normal or is this a defect?

2. The CS8-1 will sit in a 30 gallon long tank that is 12 inches wide. The volute (input to the sedra pump), when connected to the skimmer body with the included elbow, the sedra input opening (gray extended tube on side of pump) is 1/2 " away from the glass of the tank - this doesn't seem like a good situation - any comments on this? If I reorient the pump 180 degrees, then there would be nearly 3 inches between the pump input and the glass, but in this orientation the elbow doesn't reach to fit to the pump - does ER have an extension tube for this orientation of the pump?

Help, please!

I was going to post on the ER site, but I can't seem to connect to their website (odd?).

besl - the top comes off the cup so you can dump you skimmate out of it. w/out it being removable you couldn't dump you poo

you will have to orentate it so it fits on the skimmer...1/2" isn't much but if that is all you have then that is all you get.

i'm sure w/ the gatevalve mod you could move you skimmer around more

are any of the new euroreef skimmeers sealed such that you can use the more avaiable auto shut off waste collectors - how do you guys manage possible oveerflows due to the occasional skimmer going crazy?

You can add an overflow drain to the collection cup. ER does an upgrade and there are some threads in the DIY forum. Mine has never had this problem, but I also clean it twice a week so it performs better. Jim

yes but i am looking for auto shutoff - yours has never overflowed - good for you - and a little surprising - I thought everyone experienced this which I understood had nothing to do with how clean the skimmer is

I meant my collection cup has never overflowed. I never let the skimmate get close to filling it. But yes, my skimmer has never gone "crazy" and overflowed. If anything, when I feed the fish, the skimmer level drops below the collection cup. I don't think you'll have a problem if you don't add foaming agents to the water but if you want an auto shut off, then maybe someone can help.

You don't need the "auto shut off" collector. Just get a sealed collector (e.g. as simple as a milk jug with the area where the tube comes in being sealed). In the worst case scenario, the collector will fill up and the cup will fill up. Any more skimmate produced will just flow back down the neck (e.g. which is no worse than not having a skimmer at all).

This has been said before, but IMO, I think the collectors are only useful if you are really skimming wet. That is, you should be cleaning your ER *at least* once a week for better skimming.

the skimmers cup will fill up, the milk jug will start to fill up until there is pressure in the jug causing the overflow spew to want to make its way out the path of least resistance which in my cs 6-1 case is the top of the skimmers collector starts lifting up which then the bubbles, etc start to make a mess - unless the external ER skimmers have a sealed top which was a question as part of my original post - this has been said and I do keep my skimmer clean too

if you look back you will see that many er users and I can only assume other skimmers sometimes for crazy for unexplained reasons - yes I know epoxy, treatments, etc, etc can cause a skimmer to go crazy and that is predicitable so one can be around to manage it - but sometimes there is an unexplained event in the tank which can when you are not home that can cause it to go crazy which leds to my trying to find a solution - and I wanted one to cut the skimmer off

at this point I will find my solution myself but I thought I would suggest for people who have not experienced this that it does and/or could happen

OK, well, yeah. I've had a few bubbles spew out the top, but not enough to make what I'd consider a mess. If I was running the system outside my sump maybe I'd be more concenred that it might happen in the future. No matter what happens you aren't going to get gallons of skimmate on the floor or anything.

I've had my ERs for about a year now and haven't had any disasters, so maybe I'm just not as conscious of the concern. I don't run any extra collectors either... so mine fills up even faster.

I agree not too bad if it happens except I had some of the bubbles pop throwing up some light mist (salty) close to some 110 volts and I hate to see dry salt anywhere - I learned my lesson, with respect to salt water conductivity when I was young by peeing on an outside 110Volt receptacle :eek2:

I've been running a CS8-3 for two months, but am now starting to cure LR. Can you explain to me about adjusting the riser arm? If I understand correctly, the higher the riser tube, the wetter the foam is?

Also, as I am curing, any suggestions on what ype of foam I should go for? I was thinking that the wettest foam would be best, trying to catch as much waste as possible.

Thanks.

can someone tell me the difference between the cs8-3 and the rs8-3 ,and is the price different , and is $500.00 a good deal on a new one

My CS 5-2 will be here tomarrow. I can hardly wait. I've been waiting almost 3 months now, well a week since I ordered, but 3 months budgeting.:strooper: :strooper: :strooper: :strooper:

I can finally get rid of my POS Prism and air powered skimmers.

Sunnyx,
I would look into a CS12-1RC or higher, but I like the idea of over-skimming. And also it matters what type of tank/filtration your gonna run.

Buddy,
CS is now the Computer Store model and the RS is the Retail Store model. They are both made of cast acrylic and use the same pumps. However, the CS uses higher grade bonds and different fittings. I'm not sure about pricing on the 8-3 models. I wanted one but the they're just too tall for my stand, so I ordered CS8-2RC beta last week and it was in the ball park of $600. I think it was discounted because it is a test skimmer though. Jim

Could someone in here tell me the size of thier pump. The 5000 or the 9000. Any footprint dimensions on the 8-3?

radone, I ordered my CS8-3 from Marine Depot. It has specs at the MD Web site. Height is concern for many with this one, but I knew I wanted this skimmer beforehand and had the stand bulit accordingly.
