Well, i took the plunge! Pulled out the 6-2+ and put in a CS8-3+RC. This beast took up a little over half of my 50gal sump. In the next few days when it settles down I want to see how much improvement there is over the old unit. I figure with my bioload it couldnt hurt to have this skimmer, but time will tell if it was worth it.

Without looking through the hundreds of posts on the split thread, can someone give me some recommendations.

I have a CS 8-2 with the Sedra 5000. I wnt to get more out of it without buying a bigger skimmer. What would be the best thing to do?
1. Add a second Sedra 5000.
2. Change the 5000 to the 9000?
3. Make it recirculating?
4. Other options?
Please state why you think your idea is the best.
Thanks

causeofhim,

You could enlarge the venturi air intake hole by drilling it out. This is suppose to increase the amount of air therefore the amount of bubbles. Someone here has done it. I'm not sure about the size of drill bit though.

Another idea would be to add the gate valve mod. This allows for a much finer adjustment and a wetter skim.

I have heard that ER is suppose to be coming out with a new pump that will increase the air intake, but I'm not sure if the are available yet.

I'll see ya Sunday! Don't foget the cheato.

ER is supposed to have a new venturi coming out in the very very near future. it should increase performance by 50% or something they said

Any updates?

Seems to be pulling out more crap, but haven't seen my nitrate numbers go down much yet....working on other issues regarding that at the moment, but I do like the skimmer...just a beast in size(takes up over half my 50gal sump.

I'm sure it's in this tread somewhere, Just a quick question.....Will drilling a small hole and installing a drain tube into the cup affect the performance at all? I've got the ES-5. Had it for 10 months or so, extremely happy. Always something in the cup.

I'm going away for 10 days and it would be 1 less thing that someone has to do while feeding the fish. Thanks. Tim

I drilled the bottom of my cup, (CS12-2), and installed a bulkhead, and a 1/2 inch drain line. The end of the drain line terminates in a ball valve, so to drain the cup, I just upon the ball valve, and drain it into a suitable container. Much easier than wrestling that big collection cup every day. I run my skimmer very wet, so the inside of the neck never gets dirty. I clean the cup every month or two because the rest of it gets pretty ugly!

Lots of us have successfully drilled the cup and added a drain to a large collection cup on our ER's.
It doesnt change the difficulty of cleaning, I just have a hose hanging off the cup.
With Wet Skimming, you will find you dont need to clean the system as much. It doesnt create that hard funky crud on the inside of the cup.
I only clean my 8-2 about once per month.

Putting a valve on the drain is not a bad idea. I might consider that.

Here's my 48" CS8-5-RC. I modified the collection cup with a float switch that shuts of the skimmer supply pump if the cup gets close to overflowing.
No more floods!
