even pros like Steve Weast are not infallible

Truly a sad day for all of us. His tank was my inspiration. He cleaned his skimmer pump and had to leave for several hours. His newly cleaned pump injected lots more air and overflowed the collection cup down the drain. This drained the sump. Since his tap water is very good and didn't have 200G RO/DI on hand he used that with declorinator. He thinks the declorinator was too old and that caused his crash. He blames himself for not thinking it through. He thinks his closed loop would have kept his tank alive until he could make up 200G. He just went into reaction mode like most of us would.

That sucks! Been there though. went on vacation and had what I though was a competent friend who was going through a divorce staying at my house to watch things. He dissapeared on a drinking binge for a week and the housemaid called after that week to say "Your fish tank is making a funny noise and I can't see in it!" Lights had run 24/7 literaly and sump had run dry. Lost it all. and algae was so thick you couldn't see in it. One clown survived.

Wow. That's terrible.

Steve Weast and one other tank were my inspiration. I love the depth of these tanks and I tried to model the "trench" look of their aquascaping.

How tragic. This happens to even the best of us.

i can tell by everybody's reaction that this was a huge deal. can anyone help me out with pics or a little background of who steve was/is and how he has risen to such prominence?

I saw photos of your tank on your site. This is terrible. I am sure you will be back soon. Sorry about your loss. I lost a fish the other day and had nightmares. I can imagine how you fee.

thanks widefx. i actually remember that site from a month or two back when someone out here was calling it the nicest reef tank they had ever seen. i'd have to agree. it's a true shame.

His tank was my excuse to my husband for getting my 300 gal! How awful! i cant imagine,! But... you have to admire his attitude about it!
