examples of large tanks with closed loop systems

I would like to see examples of closed loop systems in larger tanks. I am getting ready to design a CL on my 8'x2'x2' using an OM 4way - vrs2 with 1.5 outputs . I will probably use a Dart for the pump considering I have 3 setting here.
I plan to run the outputs through the bottom of the tank and have considered splitting each 1.5' output (after the bulkhead, inside the tank) into (2) 1" or maybe (3) 3/4" with loc-line or something like that.
Just ideas I have thought of. Looking for others...

Anyone care to show other examples of a closed loop system?
please tell about pump and plumbing size as well as input/output line locations.

Glove,

I did my 300 with a closed loop system using 2 - OM 4 ways. Basically the tank bottom has 10 holes drilled in it. 2 - 1.5" holes (drains) and 8 - 1" holes returns from the OM 4 ways. If you picture a box the 1" holes would be in eacc corner of the box. The drains would be in the back in between the 2 return lines. If you call Paul at Oceans Motionshe will be more than willing to answer any questions and help you come up with a design. I have attached a link to my tank build. Everythig is done now but I can't get pics on to the computer till I get a USB cable for my camera. Hope this helps. BILL

My 300.......

Hmm..very similar. My 400 gallon runs with two OM-4ways, each on top of a Dart pump. The OM-4ways are synch'd and the tank inputs are setup such that the water is pushed from the back/bottom then from the front/upward to create a "rolling effect".

It might be difficult to see all the tank inputs in this shot, but there are 4 on the tank floor, and 4 on the back wall. Each has an independent 2" intake on the back wall.

Man, you guys both have some really nice systems plumbed. I wish I had a better location but this is what I get for a few years... at least im not renting!
Any thoughts about wanting a larger pump? I know the 4ways max out around 5500gph and the darts only push 3600 w/ little to no head pressures. Soo many people using Darts with a 4way. I have to ask how the flow is comming out. Strong? Mild?

Keep em comming!

Clove, I am setting up a tank for a customer that will be using 2 om4way. The tank is 96 x 36 x 25. I am doing something a little different with this tank. I am creating a roll over one direction and the switch the other direction. if you think of a dice with the number 5 and tilt it 45 degrees and do the same on the other side. This is the locations of the holes. The only twist is that one of the returns goes to the other side. If you talk to Paul at OM or send me a PM I can talk to you about our setup.
1p 1s

4s p 2p 2s s 4p

3p 3s

Both of these OM are using the drum3. so that 1 & 3 then 4 & 2 are on at the same time. Pump p will be on for hr 1,2,3and 6 then off for hr 4,5. Pump S will be on hr 3,4,5 and 6 off HR 1, 2.
I hope this helps

In my case, the flow is coming out too strong. I can't keep any SPS anywhere in a direct line of any of the outputs. Given that there are 8 outlets it is challenging to find spots. I think maybe I should have widened the outlets to 1.5" or even 2", rather than 1". Too late...

Here' the last two tanks I had with CL's

These are 2" bulkheads that run into a sequence hammerhead under the tank.

The older glass tank with a CL Or I guess I should say a CY since it didn't complete a full loop.

just my 2 cents i have a 375 its 72"x"48x"25 i am running 2 om 4 ways on darts i ran the 1.5" drains about 15" up on each side of the back of the tank that way i can remove the strainer and clean it really easy. i have 4 returns in the back shooting towards the front about 6" up from the bottom and 4 1" returns in the front coming up from the bottom about 4 " from the front now they are all designed to "miss" each other the ones in the front have "1 90s on them the ones in the back shoot water straight to the front hope this helps.. all the returns are about 12" apart..

Thanks Mtone! mrpet you have any pics? I am thinking about using OM for my next tank build. Even though the 14 or so loclines pointing in all directions make some nice chaotic flow I ould really like to try and get some real wavelike motion.

They are all very nice ideas!

Please, more, more, more! And please tell us about how the flow is comming out of the returns (+ the size of returns and pump used- all the details you care to include)

I have some detailed CAD drawings of the 2 x Oceans Motions 4 ways in the closed loop that rlxwcapt discussed, along with a flow diagram for a 360 gallon reef at:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=12005799

I hope that helps and if you have any input, I'd welcome the advice. At the moment, I'm trying to decide whether to go with 3 Darts (2 in OM and 1 for return) or maybe a Barracuda or even Hammerhead.

Cheers,

Los

There are 2 very basic closed loops in my current tank that work great so far. They run on deltec HLP interval pumps and rev up and down from low to high power at different rates which is nice for more chaotic water movement. One of the closed loops also run a spray bar down the back side of the tank behind the rocks.

I have a OM 4 way I split to a 8 way on a dart and its not enouph flow. I split it down to much I think. All that money, talking with Paul at OM more than once and I still have 2 big bulky seio 1,500's in the tank!
I am planning another tank in wall this time with a wavebox or Turbellestreams on a controller.
By the time I had 9 holes drilled for my OM, schedual 80 bulkheads, spaflex and plumbing parts, unions...ballvalves...the OM itself and the dart pump I could have paid for a nice Tunze set up without all the headach and space used up under my tank with the OM. Sometimes I think we tend to try to make things more difficult than they need to be. I know I do! ;).

Anyways thats my 2 cents. I will load some pics of just the plumbing but here is my build thread if you wanna go look....

I know this is a mess of tubes and I guess if I used hard PVC it could have been neater but I wanted the less restriction of the spaflex.

My OM has also gotten jammed and taking that thing apart because a stray grain of sand got into the intake is a super pain. I have 2 freinds with OM 4 ways and they have the same problem. Mine only got jammed once but my intake is mounted way up high from the sand. I also just do not get a true wave from my set up like a wave box can give but I am sure with re-working the plumbing I could achive a better wave pattern. Hope this helps.

Paul at OM can build you replacement drums that have their middle portions slightly lathed out. That provided an outlet for small pieces of sand to escape without jamming the drum.

I'm not sure you can achieve a wave (like a wave box) with OM-4 ways. You would have to match the frequency of the OM-4 way switch to the frequency of the tank's wave and the OM-4 way switches way too slowly.

Good suggestion Untamed12. I'm going to have that done for both of my Oceans Motions. Any downside to doing that? If there are none, then why doesn't Paul do that to all of them?

Thanks in advance,

Los
