"Exotic Coral" 3600g Personal Aquarium

I think this is the nicest setup I've ever seen, I'd love to see more pictures. I think having it outside with enclosed or sliding glass is really cool. Combined with some orchids and even some koi ;) would be prefect.
Thanks for sharing the stories and photos here.

So for all the young ones who are looking for something to Major in college...
What do you do??
Nice tank BTW
Did you have to do any permits or any type of Cali legal issues??

I am not quiet sure what you were asking, but I am just a hobbist that is addicted( out of control). I have an advance business degree, but in not marine biology. I think good place to start would be your base education office. All US major military bases have educational officers that helps/provide undergraduate and some graduate studies(I have done it myself, you could do it):)

All my animals were imported legally through wholesalers, retail chain and then to me. This including the specimens that I collected myself. All doc fee and permits were paid/ done as far as I know.

Pm's replied, I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

I didn't know you did the orchid thing too. You're area is perfect for orchids.
Yes, but I like your weather better. Warmer.

Ar you and Joe going to the swap?

Thanks Tayna. How is your RD pump? Working?

I can see that. My wife would trade with you.:D In fact, she can't wait until March. Our industry has an annual conference in Monterey and she always comes along.

I don't think Joe is going to the SW-CFM. From what I understand, his fish don't have room to swim because of all the corals. :)

I myself am going. If you are going, perhaps you should take a couple of extra days and swing by Gubler's Orchids near Twentynine Palms.

I never heard of them until a few weeks ago. An Ag inspector I was working with said they are one of the largest orchid exporters in the world.

Thanks for the link, we will be going there for a visit. We have been going to Andy's Orchid in Encinita for a while but would like to have a new source.

When in March that you guys going to be in Monterey?

We are going to the be there during the week of March 14th.

I'll have to check out Andy's. We don't pick up that many orchids. We have a small collection that we rotatie through. The in-laws have a greenhouse that we use for reblooming.

shutiny -- Truly an inspirational tank!

How did Water Dog get the tank to you??? It seems like it would be almost too large to ship even via freight lines.

How long did it take to hoist the tank into place?

Did you consult a structural engineer for the footing below the tank? How long did pre-installation construction take?

Thanks for sharing your creation with all of us!

Sean,

-The tank was transport with a large flat truck and it took two different fork lefts to get it off the truck. I think that is largely due to the uneven sizes weight on each end. The tank viewing area is 12'x8'x~6' but, the left side has a large built-in external overflow(another 6'x1.5'and 1' deep that sticks out).

- They closed down the street traffic, and it took about three hours to get it on the concrete stand. There are several large cypress trees blocking the direct access to the stand and making the job a little harder.

-We not only had to have a structure engineer to build the tank, and for the conservatory structure, and the tank stand thickness, and also a soil engineer to make sure the ground composition could support the tank/ withstand the weight.

-From the time that first drawing/meeting of the pros, to adding water to the tank it took about 20 months, I believe.

-The tank is not finished. We had problem with neighbors about pump noises, so most of the Mataray pump were removed from returns and from the close loop. We now have 4 Red Dragon for return, 6 Barracudas for close loop, and 12 Tunze 6200, and 4 Mag 12 for local augmentation of flow. I am still waiting for Klaus, and Tunze for better pumps.

Thanks every one for the nice words and encouragements.

Yes, I love my red carpets. I thought all red carpet are S.haddoni before, but now I belive some of them are mix of S.Haddoni and S.Gigantea. Some have very long tentacles that vibrate.

I received sevral e-mails that wanting to buy anemone, elegance coral, and acan lord/micro from me. I normally don't sale but do trade occsionally.

No anemone to trade or sale. I have been working on propagating carpet anemone for the past three years and have not had much success.

I do have a few colonies of Japanese Micromussa and lord that I'll trade in the near future for the locals.

The elegance coral I have is the most promissing coral for propagation out side of sps and braching type of lps. My mother colony is a 2nd generation from a 15 year colony. It is a very productive coral. On the average, I have been able to make one baby per month. This coral is very easy to care for and lives in just about any tank condition. It grows in any light, and in my sump that has very little light.

I am turning over some of the 3rd and 4th generations of elegace to Tyree and a few other farmers so that they can make them more available.

Cheers every one and Happy Chinese New Year!

Wow, this is great news. I would love to see some captive grown elegance make it into the market. One of my favorites and sadly so difficult to find anymore, at least ones that will live. I was lucky and got onenback 6 years ago, it grew and grew, no babies though. I eventually gave it to a lfs for their show tank which was three times the size of mine. They promptly killed it :(. Morons!!!! I had it for 5 years and it grew from a 4"by 3" piece to over a foot in circumference. I have a little duncan polyp in my tank because it reminds me of a mini elegance. Smaller tank and with the track record of the elegance this was the next best thing. I can't wait to see how your babies do with Tyree and the others.

I believe this elegance can be produce comercially. I made two one inch(skeletal) frags in late Sept 06. Today, the same two frags have produced 7 babies about 1.5 inch big each. It is a fast grower. What a lost for you, your animal and for the hobby when your elegance died! I hope it will never be the case for mine colony.
Are there different types of Duncan that are photosythetic?
I have seen one at Ming's Atlantis Aquarium and his colony has never been fed and it is growing fine.
Do you need to feed yours?
