Extended Hammer Coral

It's been a few days, you have an update for us? I've been so busy and RC appeared to be down much of yesterday.

Thanks for checking in. Things have actually been good. I have a slight bit of ammonia between 0-.25 everything else is 0. Getting nice growth on the rocks. All fish seem to be doing well and happy the hammer is doing great and the acan has recovered well from his dip in the sand. The new heads are growing quickly.

Purple and green tentacle plate. This was when I first put it in so the tentacles are retracted. They are extended now.

Looks like things are coming along well. I want an anemone for my clowns but I'm hoping I can get them to host something like a Frogspawn or Torch coral instead.

I had emerald crabs in my display tank for a long time but after reading posts about them going rogue I got paranoid and banished them to the sump. They never did damage to anything but I was paranoid they would try digging food out of my Acan and Hammer corals. Maybe I'll put them back in the display, I really like watching them.

It's good to hear things are moving along well again.

I had no ammonia and a hint of nitrite on the 8th. I went to the store and had them test it and they suggested I do a water change. So I did a 10 gallon water change on a 60 gallon system. They also suggested that I add 32 oz bottle of fritz nitrifying bacteria. The directions were to turn the protein skimmer off for a few days after so I did that. I tested the levels on the 9th and it was .25 ammonia and .25 Nitrite I was assuming that it was normal because of the additive. Then I tested them again today expecting them to go down but they haven't. The ammonia from what I can see is .5 and the nitrite is .25 still. I just plugged the skimmer back in tonight as well.

you were no where near cycled. you should have seen 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and some degree of nitrates before you added anything. do not dose removers or change things, as removing the nitrites will only slow down your cycle

way too soon for an anemone

Yea I know that now. I am assuming I did a poor job of describing what was going on at the store. After speaking with someone else from a different store yesterday I realized what was going on and how I made it worse. I was just worried about the clowns at that point. Everything is going good for now. Although my anemone already went behind my rocks in the back...:(

Be careful with the Anemone since it's such a new tank. When they die they make an awful mess. I'm still hesitant to get one because my tank has only been up for about 9 months. Most experience reefers recommend waiting at least a year before buying one.

I wish you the best of luck though.

I was talking to the guy at the store who seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. I told him from what I have heard you should wait at least 6 months before putting one in. I told him everything that is going on with the tank and the levels and he said I should be fine. I will just have to keep an eye on it and get it out if it dies. It seems to be doing fine right now. It hasn't extended its tentacles yet but it seems to be doing ok. It ate some mysis shrimp last night. What should I look for? In other words, if its dying what will it look like so I know to take it out?

I'll let others field your questions about what to look for with regards to the Anemone's health, since I've never owned one before. You might also want to take a look around in the Anemone specific forum. I'm sure there is stuff in there that would help.

as far as the anemone goes, loss of color, gaping mouth, inability to hold onto rocks are overall bad signs

Thanks.... He seems to be doing good. The only downside is he found a nice spot behind the rocks. Its big enough for him to open up and it seems like hes doing good I just can barely see him...

Anyone have any idea what this is? It looks like black algae popping up in a few spots but I don't know if it is black algae or if its good or bad or how to deal with it if it is bad?
