extremely large heater ?

The fireplug heaters work well.

Will this be in an enclosed space? If it's in an enclosed spacei it's usually more cost effective to heat the room to appropriate temp. This also helps reduce condensation.

how big? two three hundred watters heat kents 450 and 150 gal sump. i have a 300 and a 150 watt heater on my 90 w/ 55 gal sump.

I have two 300W on my 300G w/ 100G sump/refug. I am probably adding a third for backup and VERY cold days. I thing your better off getting multiples in case on breaks or breaks down. Put them on different circuits in case one trips. Heating may not be as much of a big task as CHILLING;)

unless you have very cheap electric I would look into radiant heat for it and use either fueloil or propane...the other problem is going to be keeping it cool on the 90 degree days....

oops I guess I should have asked where you are putting it first....

looks like out doors.

Im more concerned out our winters.

Radiant heating sounds interesting any more info ?

If I decidce to do it brandon was right 10' x 10' x 5' and inground lined with concrete and a pond liner.

Im debating setting up a reef pond but Im wondering how to heat it?
any tips are helpful.
Remove livestock during the winter.
Make it large enough so it doesn't cook livestock during the summer.
You'd be much better off doing an indoor pond/lagoon like URS member Guy has. It still wouldn't be cheap to set up, but you'd never have to tear it down for winter.

I don't think its feasible to be out doors unless you are in California. But, I think it would be really cool if you proved me wrong :).

you know me Ill try any thing! the real cost concern is salt ... something like 30 buckets!! oh and rock! Planning to build a skimmer or a series of skimmers.

thinking of setting up a mangrove field off the side of it maybe 20 mangroves to see if I can minimize water changes...

my only concern other than a heater is that I have an obligation to the livestock im keeping and if water perameters get messed up , I may not be able to afford to fix the problem... like a 20% water change ...

Gary do you think I could leave live rock out side in the pond all winter and it be ok? I dont want to cycle every year.. I dont know if indoors is an option Ill have to talk it over with the boss :)

I had been thinking about the outdoor idea but I think the costs would be incredible. I think the salt would be the least cost...for the winter I think you would need a double plastic green house..

I would start by researching koi ponds and green houses...

The radiant heat is the same technoligy used to heat floors in comercial & residential construction. It is very eficient when done properly...

The ongoing costs for a 450 are somewhat significant, thats even with many cost sutting measures.

There are a few threads in the culture forum about greenhouses & pond type growouts. You should also check out calfo's coral propogation book he has some good information on greenhouse grown corals & energy / cost conservation.
