Fairy wrasse Photo Library

Bradley, I also noticed you have a mystery wrasse in your tank. I also had one but had to remove it because it was harassing my fairy wrasses too much. They were always trying to jump out of the tank to get away from it.

My mystery annoys them at first, but then loses interest in them. It's like he wants to make sure that all the newcomers know whos boss. lol

Wrasseguy2, absolutely hideous, if you need to dump that pest, I've got a spare tank layin around that it might fit in :p
Really though, that pic is just awesome!

lol thanks scott...i hope i never have to dump that guy...his color has really changed in the past month or so he stays almost that orange pink all the time and displays like crazy but never when i got my camera..it seems like they all do that..i am going to try to catch a pic of that in the next day or two that i got off...it colors when displaying are so sweet.

ktrandc, I have a female crosshatch and sargassum with my wrasses. My crosshatch could care less but my sargassum nips small fish added after him.

How do you guys get your fairy wrasses to get along? I added a Scott, Labouti and Solar to a new 400 gallon tank. Three months later the Labouti and Solar are still tearing each other up. Do you think the aggression would die down if I added another fariy wrasse or will they just kill it.

looking good brad!

nickwit - in a 400 gallon im very surprised you have any aggression at all. Are they just chasing or literally tearing up fins?

Adding a smaller fairy would probably end up killing the new fairy. Maybe add a very large (larger then the laboutei and solar) and see what happens. i would add a xlrg pink margin to the mix. Shake things up. They are most likely fighting still for dominance.

what is the biggest one you have?

Thanks zemuron, the austrailian scott is the biggest. It would be hard to find a fairy wrasse larger then him. He is the boss. The other ones don't mess with him. The solar is a little larger then the labouti. The labouti doesn't get very many marks on him. The solar gets missing scales, protruding scales, and sometimes torn fins. The aggression is worse then what I see between my triggers and tangs. The only thing that I can think of why they are so aggressive is because we bought them from other peoples tanks. The Scott and Labouti lived together. The person we got the solar from had him for a couple of years as the only fairy wrasse.

We were also very surprised about the fighting. They have been fighting for about 3 months. We added the solar one day after the other two. We only had about half of our rocks in at the time we added them. Since then we have added a lot more rock and fish. We actually added more rock then we wanted to hoping that it would help with the fighting. Their fighting is worse when only the actinics are on. I guess we could skip that cycle all together. I do plan on adding a mystery wrasse. I wonder if that would help.

Nickiwit, I'm really surprised to hear about your wrasses fighting in that large of a system. I've only got a 55 and have a Laboutie, an Exquisite and a Rose Scaled Fairy along with 3 Carpenters and a Pencil wrasse and the only aggression I get is occassionally my Exquisite will chase my Pencil but that hardly ever happens anymore. I don't have any other ideas other than what other people have said about adding another larger more aggressive wrasse like either a Mystery or an Exquisite or Rosy Scaled Fairy to the mix. Do you have any pix of your tank, 400 gallons must be awesome!

ScottKelly, your lucky to get away with having so many wrasses. I have always liked the pencil wrasse.

Here are some recent pics that I took. We are still adding corals and a few more fish.

This picture has all three fairy wrasses in it. I used to have a huge mystery wrasse but lost him in the tank transfer.

My Scott fairy wrasse jump out today. We have glass lids that were moved over creating an opening about the size of an inch. Man its depressing.

yes it is always sad to see a nice fish like that go away..i lost a few myself..and a few high end fairy wrasses until i got a better top..sorry to hear about that
