Fairy wrasse Photo Library

No prob :) The coral sea ones will get much brighter as they grow and gain a lot of blue and purples on the tail and dorsal fin. I had a 2" male and kept it for a while and it grew into a beautiful fairy wrasse compared to when i got it. Good find. The coral sea ones are not common! The bottom pic looks to be a female - that isn't the same one is it? the 2 pics look very different.

I just got 7 new fairy wrasses and have them split up between 3 QT's.
The bottom pic is a different fish. I figured it was the female hooded. I just didn't know which male she was paired up with. The other hooded male is stunning. He finally came out to eat. I have a feeling she was paired with him and not the one that I put her in the tank with.
 
Zemuron, I just got a pic of the other hooded fairy wrasse. Is this what the one in my first pic will eventually look like?

Hi: This is my first post. I got caught in the fairy wrasse frenzy by reading forums like this one. I love it. Just bought a lineatus ($85), scott's (australian)($50), two female balteatus ($20 each)and one female flame which was free because it's a little thin. Was hoping you could help me with some questions. 1. Will everyone play well when added to a tank that has a purple velvet fairy wrasse already established? 2. Are female balteatus' red/orange in color? (I ask because all pictures I've seen have them with green). 3. Will one of the balteatus' become a male in time or not because of the other male wrasses? and finally can they all coexist with the aforementioned velvet wrasse, a kole tang and two small chalk basses in a 125g? I'm taking them home tonight and putting them in quarantine. Once I become a seasoned poster I'll try a attach some pics. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

nickiwit - that looks to be a vanuatu hooded. Adult males from vanuatu and coral sea look rather different. I personally like the coral sea ones better. I will post a pic of a small male coral sea one i got a while ago from australia.

the blue and purple in Coral Sea is more vibrant then that of Vanuatu I think. Both are beautiful though:)

I sent him to a LFS im good friends with in NH and it grew about 1.5" in 5 months and developed some intense coloring that it didn't have when it left me. lol The blue and purple highlights blew me away when i saw it again. Also there is a distinct line that seperates the red and yellow in the Vanuatu one, and the Coral Sea seems to shade from red orange to yellow. :)

here is my newest addition. It was sold to me as orange back fairy wrasse (cirrhilabrus aurantidorsalis ) I think. Dr. Tanaka, let me know if you think otherwise or have any experience with it. I have never seen it before. Anyone else with experience with this guy...........?

very nice find looks to be a nice sized male...i have one also that was a juv. male that its back was more green but has since changed to bright orange like that..and yes you are right on the id....mine displays alot and is very easy going...i have never seen it bother any fish or any of my other chase it.
 
I like Vanuatu hooded a lot more, much nicer colors. No price difference from what I have seen.

Also, if anyone is interested I know reef tank supply has a balteatus pair in, I'd get them but i have other fish priorities on my list, but if anyone is interested given them a call or email.
Dont ask Zemuron if he sells fish, he'll get in trouble ;) 2 male hoodeds in a 400gal, personally, I think if added together could do well, I think the hoodeds are probably the mildest mannered fairy wrasse from what I have read and hear.
 
2 hoodeds in a 400 will do fine i think.

The vanuatu ones always come in much bigger then coral sea ones but once the coral sea ones get bigger they are much nicer IMO. It just takes them a while to get there :) and not many people have a coral sea.

The wholesale price is almost the same but the Vanuatua are not expensive at all compared to coral sea (divers price) coral sea is about 15-20$ more.
