I do not believe he'll become a full out supermale without any females though.

What dictates if they can be classified as a supermale, is it the color or the size of the fish or both ? The last photo was taken with a flash so it looks a bit different than the others.

supermale is a loosely used term to determine a terminal male that can't revert back to a female. For most wrasses it is the size and overall color that indicates a supermale. Flame wrasse supermales, for instance, will be very large (5+" usually) bright bright red on top, bright yellow on bottom (no whiteish areas or orange usually) and then the thing that determines it is the bright blue/purple outline that surrounds most of the body and always the tail :) Also another good indicator is the long pectoral fins. The longer the pec fins the more of a male it is. Terminal males have extremely long pec fins.

Well its encouraging to hear that a characteristic of a Flame Wrasse supermale is a blue outline because mine has it on his ventral fin and tail and it seems to be appearing on the back section of his dorsal. Hopefully this trend keeps going.

New Laboutei is mine!!

i dont think it has ever been documented of a fairy changing to a supermale in captivity without females... How big is it? Yours doesn't have the colors of a supermale yet... to much white on the belly and to area where it fades to yellow is smudged still. This becomes a clearly distinguished line of red and yellow where it splits. Ill see if i can find a pic of one :)

Here's my first pair of Fairy Wrasses that I picked up over the weekend. They are Cirrhilabrus Roseafascia's:

Sara those are beautiful!! Which LFS did you pick those up at? I notice very few LFS around us don't carry anything rare and different.

Thank you! I agree, it's tough to find the cool Wrasses locally!

I got them from the Foster & Smith Frag Swap 2 weekends ago. They were from the Divers Den stock. I missed out on a beautiful Rhomboid Wrasse as I was traveling and missed part of the Saturday event. They also auctioned off a Supermale Lineatus, but the price was too much for me to keep bidding.

Oldtown, Living Sea are the only two who get in all the cool fairy wrasses and other rare fish in constantly but they are very pricey!!! I bought my supermale Lineatus from phishybuisness, and also ordered that beautiful laboutei pictured above, he will be in tomorrow. Before I lost all my fairy wrasses because of a power outtage, I started restocking them slowly from vendors like Liveaquaria divers den, phishybuisness, salty critter, reef tank supply supposedly gets in some cool fairy wrasses in. Oh by the way you just missed out on another beautiful rhomboid from divers den. He was stunning. He was a supermale. But extremely pricey at $399 for him.

I saw that ... too pricey for me right now, but that variety is on the wish list. I'm just not sure if I like the Lineatus or the Rhomboid Supermale better! I need to make that decision soon!

Have them both? I use to have them both together and they were just fine!!

399 for a true supermale rhomboid is a freakin' steal! I would buy it in a heartbeat if i wanted one. I've seen females go for 399. Even if it was a nice male 399 is still a great price.

So there's no issues with having 2 Supermales together in one tank? I just assumed you could only have one is all.

Having two supermales is not necessarily a problem. However if they are similar looking and introduced sequentially where one can form a territory, there may be an intimidation issue. Remember that Rhomboids and Lineatus are fairly close in shape and size. Still, the larger the tank, the less potential for problems.

Thanks Steve! I still need to stop by to see your tanks and get the Fairy Wrasse details from you ... obviously ;-)
