Bronco have you noticed any of your Wrasses pick at the rocks or is your experience that they're strict planktivores ? Mine have not decimated my pod population it's remained steady.

My lubbock nips at the algae that grows on my powerheads.

Yes my Pink Margin does that and he also will eat Dulse sea vegetable that I feed my Purple Tang.

Fairy wrasses will not pick at the rocks. Unless there is a stray pod running on it. Fairy wrasses are scavengers in a sense that they will spend the day swimming around looking for a free meal. But they do not comb the rocks like a mandarin. They will eat or nip at algae every once in a while. But it is not a main attraction for them.

I believe the key is to always only have one male in the tank, and make sure that the wrasses you get are different shape, different size, and different color. Your wrasses are very similar in shape, size, and color and could possibly be two males.

Hi all,
Im trying to stick a Australian fish list.

Tank is a 60g cube 2x2x2 foot :)

Thanks in advance

stagger size and color or sex and you'll avoid conflicts. I'd suggest you surf through this thread a little bit. You'll see lots of the questions your asking answered not just by me but other fairy wrasse fans.

Patchy,

Austrailia and surrounding islands like Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tahiti have the greatest variety of fairy wrasses in the world.

Look for:

Scott's fairy wrasses
Conde's fairy wrasses
Labout's fairy wrasses
Lineatus fairy wrasses

just to mention a few

My rather large QT system has regular boring old brown FW in them. It is basically a three tank system with a remote skimmer. Each tank is 2.5'x1'x4' The sump holds live rock ATM. The center tank is holding a "clown" and a "blue headed" fairy wrasse. I can't find one FW in that tank.
It would seem logical that one or both of the wrasses are dining on worms.

If you search for wrasse control on FW you will get mixed reviews from the 6 line and Halichoeres melanurus.

I am interested both in compatibility of fairy wrasses with these two species and other success stories of fairy wrasses as FW control.

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Here is a shot of my two Small Tail Pencil Wrasse and my pair (I think they are) of Black-Hat Pencil Wrasse. Sorry for all the stuff in the water but the tank is only two days old.

Not sure I'm understanding you palmer59, in a 2 day old tank you have 4 very hard to keep pencil wrasses and a good amount of coral?

Is a new 280G tank an upgrade to my 180G that I set up this past Monday. These four wrasses have been living in the old tank for over five months now. So far I do not find them any more difficult than some of the other fishes I have but time will tell. They like to hang around with this guy (see attached pic) in the middle where the current is very strong. The fish get fed two/three times a day, one thing about these guys they are great jumpers the tank must be totally covered.

sethd12,

I think marineaquatics.net has a male pencil wrasse right now. You should call them and see.

Shane,

I can't remember what brand it was. I bought that cup 5 years ago. I think it was probably Lees. However the brand is irrelevant. As long as your cup has small holes or slits in it to allow the tank water to flow through you'll be fine. If you can get a larger cup to provide more space for the fish. More power to you. The point is, allow the system water to flow through it and make sure it has a lid so the fish won't jump out. Whatever works, even a plastic apple juice bottle with holes will do. I prefer the breeder separation cups because they self float at the top of the water line making it easy to grab the cup at the surface for feeding...instead of having to stick your arm all the way into the tank to pick up a cup that sank to the bottom.

Again, what ever works best for you as long as you're prviding the fish with a safe place to get accustomed to the tank and its inhabitants.
