I have been looking for a Earle's fairy for years. Any chance you'd have access to another?

ok let me specify better, the tank is in the kitchen yes, and the fish get scared, but they get scared lets say 4 times per month.

I feed them pellets twice a day, but I feed them shrimp only twice per week. Are wrasses picky eaters?, because I read that you must first feed them mysis or brineshrimp to entice them to eat, but I donÃ"šÃ‚´t know how hard is to make them eat other foods.

As far as I know the few specimens of C. earlei that I have collected are the only ones that have been collected other than the type specimens by my dive buddy John Earle. I may be wrong, but I don't think that it has made it into the trade yet, mostly because of its preference for deeper water.
Also as far as I know the C. johnsoni, C. balteatus and Paracheilinus bellae that I have collected are the only ones that have made it into the trade. They aren't as deep dwelling but have very specific habitat requirements and thus are only found in very specific localities.

Should a tank be established for a set period of time before adding any of the wrasse family?

My readings are as follows:

0 nitrite
0 nitrate
8.0 ph
1.021 salinity
0 ammonia


Acclimation time for new additions to the tank range from 1- 1 1/2 hrs by adding a cup of my water to the LFS water every 15 minutes.

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? I really love the wrasse family but am very leery of purchasing anymore.

acclimation should be done using the drip method--and leave lights off for 4 hours after putting new fish in QT--look on liveaquaria.com for guide-- also your ph and salinity is a bit low; ph should be 8.3 and salinty 1.024 or 1.025 but yours is ok :shouldn't have caused death of your wrasses--QUARANTINE!!!!!!! for at least 3 weeks any new arrival!!!!!go slowwwwwwwww with adding fish especially in a new tank and always use ro/di water

By the way, I have owned a balteatus fairy wrasse. Two actually. So I do believe they are starting to make it into the trade. I've seen other hobbyists posting pictures of their girdled fairy wrasses on this forum. Currently I'm working with someone out of Africa for a chance to collect a Blood Stain Fairy Wrasse.

Was the C. johnsoni found in Palau as well? I was under the impression that they were from the Kwajalin atoll in the Marshall Islands

The C. johnsoni are only from Kwajalein, which just happens to be where I grew up.

not sure if was ever mentioned but can you list the different wrasses you have in each tank and if possible what order they were added?

also how mature should the tank be prior to adding a fairy wrasse?

Wow! What a bunch of help this thread has been I have had a tio of Halichoeres chrysus that were doing well and I just added a beautiful male Cirrhilabrus filamentosus he put them in line really quick. Thanks to all who have helped. Any suggestions on another Cirrhilabrus sp.

Let's say someone I know ( not me ) put a bird wrasse in a reef tank(not reef safe) and this someone(not me) wants to catch it and remove it. How would that someone (ok it is me) go about this.

hahahaha nicely said waterway. I'd suggest a trap just big enough to fit him like a big bottle or something and then hook a string to it and put some of his favorite food inside of it, watch him for a while, and then when he goes in pull the string. Or you could try catching him with a net, but fish, especially lighting fast wrasses, do not make catching with a net easy.

Hi,
Catching a bird wrasse will be best with a good trap, do not feed your fish for a couple of days and then put the trap in the tank.

Anybody have a good pic of a male Vila Wrasse?

dont feed today and try to set the trap late tomorrow.

You wont catch it if its not hungry.
