Fairy wrasse sticking head out of water

Hey all. I got a pintail fairy wrasse today and I noticed in the store it was very timid spending most of its time in the rock. After acclimating it I put her in and she was immediately eating and swimming around. Not even my meanest fish bothered her at all. But as the day progressed she was swimming mostly near the surface and sticking her mouth out of the water. I was able to catch her easily and put her in a hang on the glass acclimation box for the night because I have a ton of flow and I'm worried she will get swept up.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? Last time I saw a wrasse stick it head out of the water it didn't make it.

Any tips are much appreciated!

Thanks!

Nick

Maybe purchased a weak or sick one if all your params are good?
That happens sadly with the large turn over at LFSs.
Any idea how long it was held there? Did you see it fed?
At the LFS i shop at exclusively, the owner holds all fish a few days (cheap ones)to a week min. for more valuable species & makes sure all (including cheap ones) are healthy, acting normal & eating before releasing to the public for sale, its the one main reason i really like dealing with him period, i buy all my fish there.......no online purchasing or blind purchases from anyone else i don't know like another LFS etc.
And he orders in what i want in the next order if its available at the time.
I do realize his fish salinity tanks are at .019 so acclimating to my .025 takes me 2 hrs. along with a heater, a small circulation pump, & some Prime.
Ive seen fish pass on at his shop tho for no reasons in that time so could be how they were collected or treated before he received them. No control over that issue other then picking up at the airport which he does sometimes if the weather is really hot or really cold he told me.
Anyway good luck & hope it pulls thru for you quickly.

I fed the wrasse in acclimation and it ate frozen. I found a packet of that green and blue liquid used for new fish when you don't have a QT. I caught the wrasse with no issue and dipped her in the two solutions. She now doesn't have the white specs on her scales and is swimming around not at the surface. I think it definitely helped with whatever it was.

Drop an air-stone and see if that helps.

I used the air stone while dipping in the two solutions I mentioned above. Fingers crossed it worked!

Also the wrasse ate today when I fed. Seems normal but still a little worried

Don't really have an answer for ya but it may (dis)comfort you to know that I too have a Pintail that's been constantly swimming near the surface and sometimes to the point of jumping, splashing, and even breaching during feedings. And this has been going on for several months now. All I can tell you is to get yourself a nice secure lid and hope you never wake up to him on the floor.

Whatever were in the packets you used would be helpful to know what it actually was. If it is ich, it will return in a few days at most and same goes for flukes

I think he is talking about Blue Life Safety Stop.

I think you are correct. The wrasse went down for the night in a barnacle I placed in where she was swimming so I think that safety stop may have saved her.

My tank is sps dominant and I have 2 mp40s and 2 tunze 6095s on full blast. So I think the fairy wrasse had some issues adjusting to the flow. I turned all my power heads to half power and she was swimming more confidentially. She is eating like a pig and I'm confident she will make it! Fingers are still crossed!
