My tank was fallow on feb 1st i'm almost 90% sure it was velvet all fish including mandrain died within 1-3weeks only fish that remain is (1) a cleaner wrasse and (1) female lyretail anthias crazy that the delicate fish made it.. They have been in QT copper since 1st of feb. If this was ich / velvet can I introduce them into my DT (which now also has a UV on it not that it helps that much) on the 28th? or should I wait till april 13th which is 72 days? I have read velvet is only 6 weeks but since i'm new to hobby I'm not 100% sure and rather be safe than sorry..Do you think 8 weeks is okay or should I wait till 13th?

Thanks,

Do some research on this forum regarding fallow periods and you will find many varying opinions on it. My opinion is your wasting your time with waiting. I would break down the tank and start over.

Fallow periods vary as far as if they worked for people or not. The most important thing you can do during the fallow period is raise the temp to 80-82 to speed up the lifecycle of ich thus trying to ensure that all the cysts have hatched and none lay dormant

I waited the whole 90 days... that extra 2 weeks really doesn't matter anymore once you've waited over 2 months

So you are suggesting 2 months or 90 days?

Started feb 1st:

6 weeks = March 14th. (Assuming I had velvet since my mandarin died super quick)

8 weeks = March 28th.

72 days = April 13th.

90 days = May 1st

What do you guys think?

If u suspect ich, dont shorten the time.. i vote 90 to be on safer side.. 72 is fine but definitely not 60..

I'm on my second fallow period and I vow to never try it again. The first one was 76 days, and I think it might have worked. My mistake was shortening the quarantine period for the next batch of fish, which I think brought in a parasite again. This time I'm going to try 76 days again and not add any other fish for several months. The quarantine period for the fish will be a minimum of 6 weeks and I will medicate them and use TTM. I would go 90, but I want to satisfy my curiosity that 76 days is enough.

After my second ich outbreak, I decided to restart.
I wasn't happy with the tank anyway, and it ended up being less than the 72 days a fallow period would have lasted.
However, you are 6 weeks into it, so I would just stay the course.
Anything over 72 days is fine.

It really depends on the ich strain you have.

With many you may be in the clear after 40 days while there is at least one that stays encysted for 72 days.
And that are only the ones that have been isolated for studies so far. There may be more with longer encystment periods.

You would need to do genetic analysis of the ich your fish have to know which strain you are dealing with.

Yeah.. but i'm almost 90% sure I had velvet and NOT ich. I'm just waiting extra 2 weeks (6 weeks for velvet) JUST in case I was wrong. All fish died within a week and they were at the surface of the water swimming in power heads for oxygen(my tangs). + My madrian dragonet was first 2 die.. and they usually don't get ich..

Velvet fallow period seems to be pretty cut and dry - 6 weeks + a reasonable safety margin.
After 8 weeks you should be in the clear.

I'm going to put a anthias (my 1 remaning fish, can't believe she survived my 3 other females and 1 male didn't make it(along with 2 clowns, royal gramma, 3 wrasses, 3 tangs;/) she is one tuff cookie. She is going in on 1st of april hope it works out!
