favorite carbon

Another vote for ROX. Used black diamond before and I noticed that the ROX made the tank noticably clearer and there was nowhere near as much dust.

From every study or anything I learned from in school carbon showed to do little or nothing in salt water. And what it does do stops within the first 24 hours. It does pull out some tannins and co2 hasgreat surface area for bacteria to colonize but other then that I would say it doesn't do much.. I will agree that it "clears" your water but does not "clean" your water.

With that said I use Seachem Purigen for keeping the water clear.

It looks like rox .08 is the popular consensus. I'm going to order it soon. What method are most of you guys using? In a reactor or a bag? I've been running it in a small mesh bag, dropped into my filter sock coming into my sump. You think this is an efficient method?

Seachem Matrix or KZ. :) I use it passively in a bag between two baffles in the sump. I rinse it out twice a week in some RO water, and replace it every two weeks.

I think your method is effective because you have enough water flowing through the media.

i love the rox .08 from BRS. best carbon i've ever used. it's a very fine sized carbon so care must be taken with proper water flow through it as it will pack tightly together. i run it in a BRS single reactor with a slow flow rate and it works perfectly.

No matter what water flow I use this carbon always gets packed tightly and eventually clogged. :(

Currently I have my carbon placed in a fine mesh bag and zip tied to drain.

Whats the difference between the KZ carbon and other carbon? Zeovit strongly recommends to use their carbon.

Personally I think the Rox.08 is a pain to work with. It is small, sticks to your hands, etc. Save yourself a few bucks and pick up Black Diamond at the LFS or Petsmart... I have had great luck with Black Diamond fluidixed SLOWLY (25 gallons an hour) in a 2 Fishies reactor. I run 1/2 Cup for my 90 gallon reef and change it out weekly.

i use "large lignite" from BRS. Seems to work fine... and it's cheap too.

Now that i see so many people use and like the ROX 0.8 i might look into that though...

Anyone else get black skimmate after they replace carbon in their system.. (yes i did rinse it well before adding it). Maybe i just needed to rinse more than i did... but didn't happen when i used the Kent stuff, now i'm using the BRS stuff for the first time and it happened.

The large lignite from BRS may be good but the small is a PITA. More dust than usable carbon.

I wanted to bring this thread alive again so here's my question. BRS rox .08 or the lignite? Is the rox really worth almost double the money or is lignite almost as good? I mean, how good can carbon get right? Someone that has used both please enlighten me

Rox 8 is what I use. I also use purigen. Yes carbon does remove organics from salt water which can be harmful. Purigen does too and I think they have affinity for different organics.

I've used ESV and switched to black diamond because of all the great things I have heard about them. I am happy with it and I don't believe I will try any others. I might try that BRS Rox 8 but that's if I'm feeling festive and want to spend some extra money. Which isn't often.
