In short, I need to know what a minimum number would be to insure that large feather dusters would start to reproduce if they could be made happy. Do I need to buy enough to insure, buy luck, that I get males and females or will they reproduce regardless, if they are happy.
Back ground: Because of high feeding levels, I have had success growing carpets of the feather dusters. Right away, I got the often unwanted little pin head size calcareous growths, that you find on power heads. They grew all over the rock but in higher concentrations than normal.
Then the one inch ones that you normally get, both calcareous and soft gray tubed ones grew to more than the size of my thumb nail and started over lapping each other.
While a localized carpet of them is great they are ubiquitous in the tank over growing all of the smaller thing so I have to trim them back. You might normally say that they have just become a nuisance but at that size I like them.
I only hope that I could convert this success with the small feather dusters to the larger ones that you see for sale in stores. I wish that I had introduced them a year ago when I started my tank. Right now, I have lots of things that I want to buy so I don't want to sink a lot of money into these things.
