February 21st Meeting - DIY Food and Live Rock Workshop

I have everyone down so far with the exception of sweet20014r1 on the acro4 as that was already reserved. I will need to close down the sunset milli at this time as well. Thx. Mael any picks of the bta?

Ill get updated pics of it tonight for your Ryan, it looked like it had moved to its own rock last night which will make it easier to remove.

This is them about 2 weeks ago, it would be the one on the left that moved to its own rock. They glow pretty bright under blues.

Thanks everyone!

When did this start?

Thanks again to the frag group for putting on the meet, the demonstrations were great, looking forward to trying to make my own food and frag rocks.

Also big thx to Ryan for the coral, everything looks great and already has good pe.

A huge thanks to Reefstew (Bob) for your extremely generous donations to yesterday's raffles! I know there are quite a few happy corals and fish in the valley this morning!

Jason, I never knew a Cuisinart could be used in such a manner as to stink up the entire house... Live an learn... Your seafood salad looked delicious, btw! Your food demonstration was very informative, as well! It was also cool to see how one could make their own reef rock and frag plugs. And the myriad of items you provided for the raffle seemed to be greatly received!

To those of you who came to yesterday's meeting, and purchased a membership--thank you!

As a new member of the board, it has been exciting to hear the vision Jason, Hunter, Mark, and Eric have in taking AZ FRAG to the next level and making it a club that any member would be proud to claim membership. I appreciate your intentions, and am looking forward to future demonstrations and events like the Desert Frag Fest!

Thanks much,

Derekbc

Thanks Derek. And thank you to everyone who came out. Hope to see you all next month for PROP.

Here is the thread for the recipes for the food if you want to make the same recipes at home.

nice, do you only use the gelatin when not using veggies? Looks like that is the difference between the two recipes.

Ill be making a bunch this weekend and will also be making some frag domes/rocks

Before using gelatin, itd be wise to do some research on exactly what Gelatin is comprised of ... It may cause you to rethink Gummy Bears at the movies in the future as well

The top quality foods do not use gelatin as a binder, for a reason ... For those wishing to utilize these DIY recipies, there are other more fitting-natural substitutes in relation to reef sources-foods ... Such as, Agar & Carrageenan

HTH. And with everything in this hobby, as in life, do remember-remind yourself & others of where the information-techniques-etc source(s) truly came from

I am starting my first batch tonight, while I had bought gelatin I also had decided not to use it, for my recipe I looked at Jasons, Rods, and Larrys reef frenzy and tried to get what was in all three, but noticed neither rods or larrys uses gelatin.
Here is what I started with, got half the ingredients minced tonight, waiting for the few things I couldn't get fresh to thaw.(the beer isn't for the fishes)

the ninja was only 20 at walmart, they also had an oster for 9 if this is the only thing your going to use it for.
ending list is:
fresh squid(6 whole big squid I cleaned)
fresh cleaned shrimp(1/2lb}
live oysters(6) 2 had baby oysters on them.
about a cup ea of blanched broccoli and carrots.
scallops
krill
perch
RM Oyster feast(probably use only a little.
Reef Chilli(probably use a tsp or three)
green nori
ON red seaweed
I think the scallops were the most expensive thing, maybe 25-30$total output considering what I already had on hand.
