feeding anemones

Hi all. I've just got an bubble tip anemone.
The person told me he feeds his cooked prawns.
My question what food do you feed your bubble tips

Cooked prawns? Really? With tartar sauce? LOL

My nems eat a mix of food. Lately it's mostly LRS Fish Frenzy as it contains fish, shrimp, scallops, mysis, and vitamins as well as probiotics. Other times it's fresh salmon or sushi grade tuna -- both cut into little chunks smaller than a pencil eraser (usally about half the size).

If you want it to grow, feed it a lot, possibly every other day depending on how well its eating. If you don't want it to grow, it'll be perfectly fine without any food -- living off of the nutrients provided by the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae that grows within the tissue of the BTA.

My personal favorites are squid and oyster. Squid usually needs to be chopped up and the oyster can be fed whole its really delicate and easily digested. Other foods I often feed my anemones are clams, shrimp, and some smaller bait fish.. All the food should be RAW!

I have a ritteri. I got a frozen bag of raw reveined shrimp. Just thaw one out every other day, break in two pieces and stick it in his tentacles.

My LTA just spit out the bones of my missing Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse. $44 fresh fish meal does an anemone good but not your wallet.
When I am not feeding my nems $44 ornamental fresh fish. Mysis shrimp,or freeze dried krill make good meals for them.

LOL cooked shrimp... I'd find a new lfs

I feed mine regular raw frozen shrimp you can buy at your grocery store. I cut them into slices about 1/8" wide and then half them long ways. I also peel the shell off of them before feeding, feed one to two times per week. You don't have to feed them but if you do they will grow much faster.

I have fed them the little frozen salad shrimp. you can get a bag of 100 for like 8 bucks and they are fun to watch eat. if they are pretty good size I just thaw them out in a glass of aquarium water and feed the tiny little shrimp to them whole, I have done that for years and never seemed to hurt anything

^ how are you liking the LRS Fish Frenzy i was looking at that. Do you feed it to everything?

Mine like Silver Sides.

You obviously didn't get the memo. There have been many fatalities of anemone's all different species in recent history that have gotten very ill or have died from Silver Sides. I would suggest you Google it for further information.

It's very safe to feed grocery bought frozen raw shrimp and cut to bite sized pieces. Nems love em.

Wow didnt know that. I feed mine shrimp anyway, but thats good to know.

I just purchased a Bubble Tip about a month ago and it seems to like Sliver Sides, the fish store i got it from recommended that I feed it that. But I will most definitely be researching it. Has anyone had any ill effects from the Silver Sides or any other recommendations for caring for a Bubble Tip?

I personally have never used silver sides so no problems here, nor do I know of anyone that has had problems because most people I know don't feed them. I just know there was a big article a while back about it that I read so just passing it along. And you know it could have just been something in one batch of the processed silver sides that had the problem so it was probably isolated. I wouldn't be one to take that chance though.

Kris, just buy frozen raw shrimp from your grocery store and cut frozen into 1/4" or so pieces and feed after thawed, this is what I do and my 3 BTA's are fat happy and growing. This is cheaper too

The best color Ive ever gotten out of my Malu was when my clowns would take Spectrum pellets and feed the nem.

They weren't really feeding it but would grab the larger size pellets and spit them out because they couldn't swallow them.

Ed, I can see that being beneficial to the nem color wise. I have thought about using it before, think I'll add some pellets to my coral mash and do a direct feed to see how it effects color on corals as well as the nems. I've got 3 sunset bta's

Really if your light is good you don't even have to spot feed them, light is their main source of energy.
If you do spot then mysis, scallop, raw shrimp are good.
Silversides SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Squid and oyster high nutrient foods. Shrimp, scallop, clam, also good foods silverslides are not so safe. They have to many stops on their shipment before it gets to your store. With all of those stops there is constant thawing and refreezing which degrades and spoils the food. Id you want to buy safe food do what I do a find a fish market and go buy some nice quality fresh seafood right off the boat. If you dont live near a shore fish markets are usually still around and have fresher seafood than alot of the stuff you see in the grocery stores
