It truly is calming I did that when I first bought this house- I dug the hole and then spent a good 3-4 months on stadby with my wife furious LOL.
Then with one of my good friends from an LFS down in Miami we got together- got tons of rocks from , again a place down south(some sort of nursery-rock farm) and viola!
It was problematic at first because the consistency of the ground as well as coral rock u get to here in Fl after a couple of feet deep, anyways half is buried half is out(was not risking messing with house infrastructure) the half that's above ground had to be covered and that's when the rock came in handy. The foliage half is live half is dead.
At times I've lost some kois to predators such as snakes and birds- none recently since the structuring(logs and underwater rocks were placed)
Its been running for 3 years straight- My pump died once after It ran dry for 3 days Yikes. Other than that I just change the UV light bulb($20) once a year. No other husbandry or maintenace.
Once in awhile I get tons of the cheap goldfish and they r gone in 2 days-them kois are HUUUNGRY.:smokin:
BTW i've also lost some turtles as they get older them sliders just leave-There's one in the pic.
Once I bought some albino turtles and those were eaten by birds -sooooooooooo mad LOL.
