Bummer :( Poor guy :( As much as that sucks you'd think he would've been a bit smarter and more prepared :(

After this last power outage and the carnage it wreaked on the city of Saint Louis, we have decided to invest in a home generator with auto-transfer switch. It is a large sum of money, but it will be worthwhile having peace of mind next time the power goes out. It would also be nice not to lose all of our groceries and to sleep in air conditioning when the temperatures outside are over 100 degrees.

I feel bad for all those that lost their precious animals entrusted to their care. Ultimately, we are responsible for our tanks and must take every precaution to safeguard their well-being.

If you read his thread all the way through, you will see that he apparantly DID have a generator, but it was disturbing his neighbor so he turned it off. Weird stuff.

The neighbor was threatening to call the cops because the generator was keeping him awake. Fine neighbor.

Sorry, but if my tank would die vs my neighbor needing sleep.....

Call the cops. Write me a ticket. I will take that position before a judge any day.

That is such BS... They'd be contacting the police to take me away because I watched my neighbor die instead of watching my tank die. :uzi: :blown:

I don't have as much invested as was in that awesome reef display, but seriously, your neighbor could sleep in those temps? Even without some noise I'd find it hard to sleep. Believe me, we slept within 30 feet of a big 10 KVA generator in Iraq, not to mention the helicoptors within a hundred yards. You get used to it...

Hey Nookie,

I almost forgot... please let me know how much you get the generator for... I think it is a good investment. I mean I would have lost several hundred in food alone.

I ran my tank on battery powered pumps for three days before the neighbor got a generator. They are not as good as a generator, but a must have for around $3 each. (probably should be part of a minimum emergency reef kit) Of the 4 I got 5 years ago, two still work. (One crapped out on day two) Time to buy 4 more.

Don't they sell oxygen pills? Kind of like alka seltzer but somehow increases oxygen levels in the tank? I remember someone claimed to use these during a 5 day power outage.

Yeah I would be interested in the costs of a whole house generator, would it be diesel?

Might be out of place here as I don't know the whole story and I am sure I will get corrected but....does nook even have a tank set up yet? Water?

true but that was after the fact....

I purchased a Guardian 16kW generator with auto-transfer switch today from Home Depot. They have a 10% off anything up to $2000.00 until next week, so that took another $200 off the price...grand total with tax, curbside shipping was $3500.00.

Wow Dave, you sure take your 29 gallon tanks serious!

Let's just say I don't want to lose any corals in my 29g acro tank:D Natural gas is a pretty safe bet...would have to be a large earthquake or natural disaster to take the gas lines out...knock on wood this never happens. As it was, the power outage was stressful on Ann and I physically and emotionally, this is money well spent for some peace of mind.

dave

and if there was a large earthquake that somehow affected natural gas lines I would think that more than the tank would be at stake...probably break the tank

good purchase on the generator
