i recently took some new pics and thought i would post them here again... since a couple peeps asked, i had my thread moved, i was getting negative light upon my thread and system, as well as my husbandry practices, so i figured i would have it moved... but i still like to share with my locals who appreciate my hard work and endless hours i put in :)

thanks for looking peeps, these were takin today, one day after my official one year anniversary for keeping sps for the first time ;)

can you tell us why you have all the stacks and the height ???

well, i have many reasons... most dont like it as they are so used to convention and conformity as well as the look of realistic ocean scapes... the following is an exerpt from my thread in response to a question very similiar to yours... not all the context of it pertains particularly to your question, but its very explanative, and will give you an all around understanding of why i do things the way i do...

**************

the tiles are my own thing... an idea thought of through wanting to display my corals and only the beauty of the corals themselves and emphasizing that above all else... as well as create a good enviroment for them to thrive along with barebottom and awesome flow (which i believe far too many do not have enough of, or understand how truely important it is)... I also do not like my corals contaminating my rock and/or growing on it, which is why i keep it in my fuge and sump... and i REALLY dont like seeing corals that have their growth inhibited by being cramped up against another colony... its my way of seperating my setup from what EVERYONE else in the world of reefing does... I am not a coral farmer as some have accused me of... however, like most everyone else, i do frag a bit here and there, but clearly if you look at my corals, i am no chop shop, for the most part they are completely left alone... i jus choose to make a display case style out of my setup... when it reaches the point of a couple years down the road, i hope to have a large, shallow tank with nothing but a spread of beautiful corals visually enhanced by altering, but pleasing to the eye heights along with the need of each colony first and foremost... right now i am thinking a 6' x 3' x 18" tall, lit with a (10) bulb, 60" t5 fixture... filled with hopefully 100 or more or so of my favorite sps and zoas/palys w/ a few select favorite fish of mine to add to it's beauty and presentation...

the tiles are not everyone's "cup of tea" as i have been trashed a little here and there about my approach... but there are many more who think its awesome and truely unique, which was my goal... unique, and different, but yet something of substance...

also the tiles allow me to adjust the light they get, the flow, and height of the corals placement in the water column... so i can really create a custom station for each and every colony... i will say, a standard 75g isnt the best tank to do this with, but for now its what i have... i do have a standard 120 in wait, but i dont think i am gonna use it for my corals at this point, if i use it at all... i prefer 18" or shorter for height, and even the 21" of my 75g now is too high for my liking... the tiles also make for an amazing place for pods to find safety and nest between... i cant even tell you how many pods of various sizes are in my system... thousands upon thousands... you really see them when you look in when the lights first come on in the morning...

so again, the tiles get different reviews, but its more about the beauty of the corals, the growth patterns I get with the heavy flow (dense and thick) and their overall health... so far, knock on wood, i have had some very good luck, even with all the mistakes i have made in the first year, which will not happen in my second year... of course barring anything stupid happening by chance...

personally, i love my approach, and aside from perhaps plumbing in a nano style small volume tank into my system so i can show off my aquascaping skills, i will never change my style of setup... I am the first i have seen in 5 years of reefing to do this, and I am very proud of it...

*****************

hopefully this helps you understand some of my reasons for my methods... after meeting you at the one meeting i attended for ctars in april, i figure you to be an old school, conventional setup type guy... as i am not sure you will understand or appreciate my setup for its individuality, jus plz try to concentrate on the growth patterns and beauty of the corals themselves, above all else... as that is all i am trying to do is accentuate that, and that alone :)

i would also like to note, that the mention of the 120g in wait, isnt gonna be used for an upgrade... i now have a RR 180g that will be used for my next upgrade, that i bought as a package deal last weekend... the 120, if not sold, will be the refugium for the upgrade... however this probably will not happen until this coming autumn at the earliest as tank space at this time is jus not needed...

Right now I have a 120 with lps and softies. Im in the process of setting up a 180. This will be my first time with MH lights, so I want to try some SPS once the tank settles in. Your pictures really make me excited about getting into the "SPS world". Maybe in the future we could make a trade or 2. Great pictures.

i really had no idea how addicted i would get lol, even though i recently got rid of 12 or 13 sps types i had and narrowed it down to 33 at this moment is time... i really wish i had an extra tank to do some lps, but at the same time, i really would rather jus concentrate on and cater to my sps... and of course we could trade a bit here and there, i dont have any frags at this time, but i do frag off a few tid bits here and there, as well as the tips and what not i mount to plugs that jus happen to get knocked off by accident, whether it be by my hand or my turbo snails (darn little bulldozers, lol)... but yea friend, jus keep in touch or add me on your friends list, and hit me up some time... i love to trade, especially for zoas...

and as always, thank you for the kind words :)

I was using 8 T5s with really good results in a 120. Do you stand by your lighting choice or do you sometimes look at MH or LED and wonder if the other other side of the fence isn't "bluer" (pun).

I Have been drawing up many off the wall designs for aqua-scape myself. There is a lot of less than traditional designs out there. In theory every tank is an abstraction of nature. Don't be too quick to disregard the other really cool things people are doing with rock/ foam ... tile in your case. I would love to come up and see your work in person. I appreciate the new perspective you are adding.

i do consider using halides from time to time... i am sure i would get faster growth if i do, but i wouldnt wana use 250's, i would wana use 400s... however i am not sure i wana pay for the electricity it would take to power them... i recently got a 180 AGA setup that came with PFO 400 watt ballasts... one single and one dual... however the dual is broken on one side and needs to be repaired... someone in my club however is gonna basically give me a dual 400 watt PFO ballast to replace it out of the kindness of their heart, as they jus dont use it and went to t5s recently... ill have the ballasts to do so when i set up the 180, IF i choose... however, i think i will probably jus upgrade to a 60", 10 bulb t5 fixture, or make my own custom lighting with 12 staggered 48" t5 retros from sunlight supply... i really love t5s, and realistically probably wont go to halides cuz of power consumption... and i wont do leds cuz i dont really care for them with everything i have read, good and bad... of course there will be the peeps that tell me i am wrong or whatever for not wanting them, but i did my research, and plenty of it, and t5s are what i have decided works for me and what i like, for many many reasons... regardless of what i do with the halide ballasts or my thoughts of them, i am going to hold on to at least the single, that way down the road when i setup a frag tank, i can go with one nice 400w halide setup for that, which will be cool imo, and my frags should grow real well...

i am not discounting anything anyone else does with their creativity and rockwork as i love them all, especially rock walls and structures done with foam and things like that, i really love them... well except un-creative, dropped in rock piles, but to each their own... i know first hand what its like to have peeps look at your setup, and not be able to get past the look of it that they dont like or arent used to, rather than jus appreciating the livestock and corals amongst it and the hard work, thought, and planning that went into it all... and yes, some people do that, and its a shame... but whatever, again, to each their own... my personal goal, was to be different, and do somehting that sets me apart... but again, i love most if not all tanks, becuz its not jus about the look of a tank, its about the shared passion and hobby we all share, as its the reason we all come to a site like this and share ideas and systems in the first place... its something we all have in common

lastly, my door is always open to good people who share an interest in my system and would like to know more and check it out in person, though its still got a long ways to go... and of course, i take mutual interest in anyones tank that takes interest in mine :) so if your ever driving through, hit me up, perhaps we can work out some hobby talk time ;)
