Filter Socks vs Filter Cups

What do you guys prefer?

I'm currently running filter cups with filter floss inside and it clogs up in about 2/3 days and water runs over the top. I have never ran filter socks and wanted to get you guys personal experience with either or.

Filter socks can go a bit longer. I use the socks because they give me more real eastate due to the flexibility. Pita to wash and change though

I've been using mesh filter socks lately on my RSR 170 as opposed to felt. The mesh socks don't catch as much but can last at least a week.

Thanks - if I decide to got that route I guess I would buy about a few weeks worth of socks and mass wash them when out. Do you hand wash the socks first to get all the debri out or just toss them in the machine.

Good to know. I like using the filter cups just for the fact that I can toss the filter floss when it's done and replace it. But if it's a week with the mesh it sounds a whole lot better.

I have 16 and a few I cut the top part up so it will always open to the water level of the sump, vacation for more than 1 week mode.... I change them once a week and wash them at the laundromat with triple the bleach amount and no soap. The hard part is air dry them after washing .... In the winter :-)

Filter cup for me I keep two now and it’s a lot easier set one up for the change out to make it faster just switch cups throw away old floss and set up with new floss for the next change out.

I use cups and a white pad over the top covering all 4 cups. just have to clean/replace the white pad once a week. Much easier than dealing with filter socks. I put marine pure balls in the cups.

I use 100 micron felt socks. Change them twice a week and toss them in the washer with a little bleach. I don't think it's that much work.

I'm using cups the problem being that small amounts of the floss gets caught in my skimmer impeller. I use a mesh mod so it may be worse than with a needle wheel but the floss gets so embedded in the Enkamat that I have to replace it every month or two.

I use the cups and floss. I'm surprised it was stated that they clog fast. I don't have that problem at all. I haven't changed mine in a month or so. On purpose to build up some nutrients that my system had been lacking for so long. I do have 3 x 7" cups though so that could be the difference? Its much easier and less work than changing, hoarding, and washing filter socks.

I do like s2ks use of the filter pad across the top and ceramic media in the cups. I may try that down the road. I found that initially for my tank, the ceramic media was working too well so I removed it for now.

Thanks for the input guys. I will continue to use the cups and use half the amount of filter floss that I'm using hoping that prevents clogging to early.

Forgot to mention maybe my cups clogs pretty quick as I run a bare bottom tank with one Gyre 230 and MP10 running at the bottom to kick everything into sump.
m0nkie how's your water clarity with no sock/filter?

I ditched both methods about a year ago. No noticeable difference in water clarity but my fuge is bulging with critters!

no issue with clarity. food particles do stay a little longer after feeding. (I broad feed whole tank). Also probably because I have pumps inside the sump to clean the floor every few hours.

I had my skimmer keep overflowing and took me lots of time and effort to figure that's the problem.
As soon as I removed those tiny floss from impeller which were hardly even visible, Skimmer back to normal.

I use air filter media
