Final Addition for my Eight Foot Reef

Here's my current stock list in my 96x25x14 rimless, softie dominated reef. I have very open rock work. I was initially fairly firm on my stock list, but I'm considering one final addition. Most of the local folks who have seen my tank think I have plenty of room for more fish. What's everyone think? I'm thinking of another Tang, but all suggestions and input is welcome.

Magnificant Foxface- 7.5"
Juvenile Vlamingi Tang- 6.5"
Blue Sided Fairy Wrasse- 5"
Lamarck Angel- 3.5"
Sixline Wrasse- 2"
4 Blue Eyed Cardinals
Ocellaris Clown Pair

Here's what the tank looks like with the current stock:

beautiful aquarium but the vlamingi is a huge fish once fully grown and may be abit awkward in the aquarium if it reaches full size, you have room for more fish but not if you intend allowing the vlamingi to attain full size imo and they grow very fast too

not contributing to the threat but, WOW. You have a very nice aquascape. Is that an anemone your clowns hide into? it's gotta be a foot across!

I would say at some point the vlamingi would get to big for your system because it is a lower height tank most standard 8 foot tanks but for now I am sure it is fine. I really like your tank it looks great. Maye a yellow tang for a punch of color. I had a vlamingi when she got around 7 inches in my 125 she started really picking at my fish even the niger trigger. They all had chunka taken out of their fins. I found her a larger home at that point. Maybe a male and several female anthias would be cool. I have lyretail and their colors look very nice.

The Vlamingi is definitely a temporary resident. I'm well aware of their potential size, and when the time comes he will go to a larger tank or aquarium. She's my favorite fish actually- stunning and a great personality and almost zero aggression.

tibob32- Thanks! Nope that's Anthelia covering that rock. That rock is probably 15"x7" and it has been host to the clowns since it was just a small frag on that rock. :)

So I decided to pick up a couple of Anthias down at Greenwich Aquaria. Unfortunately, the little one went overboard. I've been quite bummed about it. Anyway, and on a brighter note, the Bimac is a fantastic fish:

Here's a video from tonight showing all my fish:

Sixline and fairy wrasses jump. Not IF but WHEN. But I agree you have room for more fish. If it were me I would consider a large species angel. Of course each person has individual preferences, but I favor an Emperor. Beautiful with a nice personality.

I agree with Steve on a large angel. Also, maybe get your lamarck's a mate? Plus, I'd add a bunch of little fish for color and movement, like anthias. But I'm biased :D

Beautiful tank. I love Lamark angels. They are very under rated and yours will grow to a nice size with streamers!

I really love your tank!! It's very much what I want to turn my current 240 into in a few years.

As for the fish, I would do some sort of Acanthurus genus Tang....Powder Blue, Achilles, Sohal, Barienne, Dussumier, etc....A single Tang from this genus would be ideal IMO.

Sixline and fairy wrasses jump.

Steve, yes I'm well aware. When I first got the Blue Sided Fairy- a stunning fish btw, I tried running egg crate on the top. I just could not stomach the look. I've seen the other options for netting that people have built, but I just can't have something ruining the rimless look. Also, there is a bow in my tank, so fashioning something that would be 100% effective is nearly impossible.

Ironically, I've had that Blue Sided Fairy Wrasse for 16 months and he is thankfully still in the tank. Just as strange, I've never actually seen him jump.
I did find him in the overflow one time, and I was counting my lucky stars it was just once in 16 months. I've talked with some folks about this, and someone gave me an interesting explanation. Since my tank is long and shallow, and 100% of the current is coming from the peninsula side, that fish rarely jump outside of the current. So when the wrasses do jump they're actually end up long ways and back in the tank.

The sixline has probably been in the tank a good six months, and I've seen no issues save for the other night. My wife was doing laundry and she heard a "plunk;" well the sixline went over and down a wiring hole. She tore a panel off the stand and tossed him right back in. Thankfully my wife has excellent reflexes. :beachbum:

If it were me I would be looking at a Naso Tang.

Blonde Naso Tangs are certainly beautiful fish with great personality, but I'm not convinced putting one in with a Vlamingi, in my size tank, would be a wise decision. Any thoughts?

But I agree you have room for more fish. If it were me I would consider a large species angel. Of course each person has individual preferences, but I favor an Emperor.

Beautiful with a nice personality.

....I agree with Steve on a large angel.

Well gentleman, the idea of a large angel has crossed my mind. I absolutely love Goldflakes. However, I've shied away from a large angel for several reasons. From what I understand, an adult Angelfish's natural range in the wild is approximately 40 square miles. Since my tank is 8 feet, the Vlamingi and Foxface enjoy the extended swimming room and open rock work. However, I'm not sure this would be the case with a large angel. I'm concerned because many of the angels I've seen look cramped, even in sizeable tanks, and since my tank is relatively shallow, I have some reservations.

My other line of thinking is that I would end up with one that would ravage my softie gardens. I do have some choice LPS pieces that might be open targets as well.

Also, I've started reading the threads lately of folks who have had fantastic success with the Goldflakes, only to suddenly have them stop eating and die.

So Steve and SDGuy, what do you think? Am I just being neurotic? :p Do you think an Emperor would be too large for my tank?

Also, maybe get your lamarck's a mate? Plus, I'd add a bunch of little fish for color and movement, like anthias. But I'm biased

I've thought about a mate for the Lamarck, but to be honest, the Lamarck, while nice, doesn't add too much color to my tank. I have the 4 Blue Eyed Cardinals, pretty fish but a bit bland. The other thing about the Lamarck- she picks...yes folks...Genicanthus pick. :) She hasn't done enough to damage anything...more of a ..hey what is this sorta thing. I've been making sure I'm getting at least two feedings a day now and Zooplankton at night.

The Bimac is gorgeous, so I'm definitely considering one or two more. However I just lost the other little guy over the back and am tentative. :(

That's a gorgeous Sarcophyton elegans!

Thank you very much. I love that leather..it completely "anchors" the tank. That piece is now 13.5" x 9.5" :D I just had to move the only Acropora I have in the tank, a colony of Tri-Color Valida over a good 4 inches because the Fiji was growing over it. :)

Beautiful tank. I love Lamark angels. They are very under rated and yours will grow to a nice size with streamers!

Thank you so much. Oh I totally agree, a beautiful, active, and bold lil fish. Still, I'd like to get a little more color.

I really love your tank!! It's very much what I want to turn my current 240 into in a few years.

Thank you! To be honest I've lost a couple Acanthurus in this tank. I had a Lieutenant and a Lemon Tang. Unfortunately, they didn't do so well. This was around 4 months after I had started the tank, and I'm not entirely sure if they were not healthy to begin with, or it was just the conditions in my system at the time. I had some pretty nasty damsels in the tank at the time, all of which have been since removed, so this definitely contributed to their stress. The Lieutenant developed black ich, and I stayed away from tangs for quite some time...more fish for that matter, until the tank had gone through another gestation.

Now that the tank is 19 months, I've definitely considered another. Believe it or not, the fish I have get along famously and will even swim together. I'm trying to stay away from anything that would throw a cog in the works. While I've seen people have tremendous luck with Powder Blues, they are generally very sensitive, prone to ich, and can become real bullies. I'm not sure the Achilles would be much better, and the Sohal...gorgeous fish, but I'm just not sure.

Barienne, Dussumier- both are fish I've admired, but from my understanding they get massive. Also, I haven't seen one with a price tag that justifies me cracking open my wallet. ;)

The input here folks is tremendously helpful. Apologies if I rambled a bit, but I really do think carefully about what fish, if any, I add to my tank these days.

My vlamingi was my favorite too great personality . She recetly started going after my other fish so I had to rehome her to a different system.

Stocking a tank with respect to size of the adult fish can be a personal choice. Your reservations are your own, so they are neither right nor wrong. I can't comment on the emp, since I have never kept one. They do get huge though. But there are plenty of smaller "large" angels. Navarchus are gorgeous, and don't get too large. Goldflakes too, as you mentioned, though I too have heard of them having unknown issues. Flagfins are very pretty, IMO, and totally underated. Asfur angels are known to grow ridiculously slow in captivity. How about the Chaetodontoplus genus? I have a pair of meredithis and love them! The black bodies and bright yellow tails are just so striking!

Of course the nipping of coral is always a concern.
