final photos being taken this weekend

My aquarium is plumbed to it's basement sump via three holes drilled in the center of the aquarium. One standpipe is the main drain and two are returns. They're all hidden by rock/corals inside the aquarium and the lines run to and from the basement inside the stand and aquarium.

Here's a sort of mini poll. Which pic do you folks like better... #1 or #2 (disregard size difference) and (if you like one over the other), why?

#1

#2

The one you didn't give us an option to vote on is beautiful.

I like #2, because of the variation in color; I like #1 because you can see more of the whole tank & you don't have that diagonal line coming from the bottom of the left corner frame.

So.... #2

Stephany, shouldn't you be studying? :D

Sorry, Gary, I don't see the difference other than size, angle and lighting? What are we comparing?

Caught!
I'm Soooooo procrastinating. Although, I'm not going to sleep at all tonight. Just making coffee now. I have a test tomorrow.

Thanks for your input, Steph. I value opinions- especially the opposite sex's.
I can change the crop on #2 so it's more like #1.
I'm glad you like the pic I didn't offer a vote on, too.

mostly lighting/camera settings

picture #1 was taken by manually choosing aperture priority settings on my camera
picture #2 was autofocus with no flash- which often results in corals nearest the halides getting overexposed

Oh, so it's actually your photography skills? :D

I like #2. I like the bright pictures where you can see everything and all the different colors.

Carrie

Definatly # 2. A lot more color. Nicer picture to look at, the first isn't as eye-catching as the 1st...Great pictures!

Same pics here, but I made #1 larger

#2 is overexposed directly under the halides, but I'm finding many people prefer it over the first picture, which actually might show more colors...

I kind of like #1. The pic seems to give the tank an aura, or something. Plus, the clown looks good in it.
Have you tried taking any pictures when the suns coming in the skylight? Seems like that may help balance the room and tank lighting.

I agree, Brian. The lighting in pic #1 gives it a kind of "aura" (for lack of a better term).
Working with sunlight for macros is great, but for a shot of the whole aquarium it's a nightmare- the daylight streaming in from the windows and skylight are is much brighter than 1,000 watts of artificial lighting over the aquarium.
I'll start tearing things apart in a couple of hours, so it looks like I'll need to make do with what I got.

Gary,

Will your aquarium be set up this weekend? Maybe I can talk to my husband about getting some shots. He needs some practice on aquarium photography. I have no idea what our weekend looks like.

Let me know. Of course, I would be a little jealous as he has yet to take some good pics of my aquarium. I have taken all of mine, which is why I don't have any good pictures yet.

We went to B & H Photo in NYC this weekend. It was amazing. Brian picked up an awesome set of studio lights, some backdrops, and a new lens. I could have bought A LOT of stuff for my tank with what he spent! :eek1:

Gary,
This may sound ghetto but......... :)
What if you put a bedsheet over the window? That way you may get a happy medium.
I think the sunlight is nice, but overpowering, same with the halides. If you had something that let some light through but not all. ....I wonder if one of those smokey colored lens filters would work too. (just a guess)
You're probably soooooooooooooo sick of taking pictures now.

You're soooooooo right. :)

There is no way to eliminate some sunshine from getting into my house during the day.

Jamie- thanks for the offer, but it's too late. I start ripping into stuff in a few short hours.

Top down before tear down begins. Removing several pounds of rock today. More to follow.
Look closely near the Convict Tang. There's a pink anemone on the rocks that I can't get a good picture of just yet.
