Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

Kudos to twallace. You are a true gentleman recognizing mojoreef's contributions. The thread started on reeffrontiers with an old friend in the Seattle area, mojoreef, and mojo certainly is his reef. However the mojo extends far into his knowledge. He often has and encourages in-depth discussions on numerous topics. If I'm not mistaken, boomer had a large part as well in defining the mechanisms and why it works. I now reside in San Diego and miss the lively discussions with him at the local Puget Sound Aquarium Society discussion up there.

Best to all. Keep up the good work and stay FRIENDLY. I sometimes notice that is a problem here.

for those that have SPS

and boosted Mg as described in the first post of this thread:

did an elevated level of Mg affect your SPS at all? ("burnt" tips, tissue necrosis or perhaps faster growth?)

Not in my case.
I have to say that I saw a couple of turbos dying. But it was stated during the topics, and I was ready to.

My sun corals fed very slowly and poorly with the high mg, and 2 turbos died, but no other adverse effects noted.

no issues with elevated mag and sps here. All are doing well. I'm still working on this so not quite to the point where I can point to full success with this method. I have experienced some limited success in some areas of the tank, just no 100% yet. I just switched salts to TMP (which is the salt I use to use, before the hair algae set in).

I'm just starting this now. My Mg was at 1160ppm too low so it will take a little longer to get to 1600-1700ppm

Didn't end up working for me. I boosted mine from 1150 to 1550 for a few days, nothing. Went up to 1650 for a few days, still nothing, then finally up to 1750 and still nothing seemed effected. I have both bryopsis and hair algae. I was using Tech M. I wonder whats different about mine that made it not work.

if you have a large enough tank to house a powder blue & naso tang they should do the trick, nature usually finds a way, again my tank was litterally covered everywhere with hair & briopsis so thick I just wanted to give up, I finally added a powder blue & he just munched it all away in about 2 weeks, now he & my naso keep things tip top & no algae issues at all, simply awesome.

I have a naso, yellow, and hippo. None of them will touch it, except the yellow might pick at some of the lower rocks from time to time.

I even stopped feeding them for a week to force them to eat it, and they just got to where they'd attack any food that hits the tank with vigor.

I started raising my Mg today. I have a "small" bryopsis problem. I use ZeoMag in my Ca reactor and it keeps my Mg at about 1410 ppm. I picked up a gallon of Tech M (thanks Dan) and started raising my Mg. I'm shooting for 1700 in 6 days. We'll see what happens.

Yeah take it step by step and don't rush. You cannot be impatient with this stuff.

I am quite sure that by the time you hit your last step, you will have no more byropsis.

Ideally a mix of 10:1 Magflake to Epsom Salts, otherwise only Magflake. Note that Magflake may contain impurities that result in Ammonia so do not increase more than 50 to 100 ppm per day.
I sure it's mentioned somewhere but This ratio is mixed with how much ro/di water?

My bryopsis has started to reappear about 4 months after last using Tech M. And my mag levels are actually quite high.

So I'm a believer that it's a function of something in Tech M - not necessarily mag levels. Gonna have to pick up a bottle to help keep it away.

MrSquid,

In my experience, bryopsis will continue to come back until you solve your nutrient excess issue. In my case, I upgraded the skimmer and added 4 Koralia 4 powerheads. I also replaced my MHs which were almost one year old. My tank has been free of bryopsis for several months now and my Mg level is between 1200 and 1350.

I needed the high Mag treatment initially to combat the extensive bryopsis outbreak, but it is not a permanent solution.

My two cents worth

Lunch - I did too 2 part too - but also did Tech M.

Montrealreef - I hear you. Nutrients are diminishing - almost ALL my lettuce has virtually disappeared. Cheato grows great, so there's obviously some there. Should be interesting to see if the bryopsis gets aggressive before I'm able to grab some Tech M.

I've read from lots of people who went the Tech M route that once you get rid of it using Tech M, you need to still occasionally dose with it to keep it gone.

I'll be testing elimination of excess nutrients soon. I used Tech-M before, and it definitely knocked a big dent in the bryopsis, but it returned.

The tank is a 135g with no sump, and I'm putting together a 100g basement sump and frag tank, with an Aqua C 400 skimmer, UV sterilizer, etc.

Sure hope it works, but even if I still battle bryopsis, this tank needed a sump bad.
