Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

My bryopsis has returned in small parts, but so far it's only growing on my plumbing (overflow box, overflow screen, return pipe). It's not started growing back on the rocks that it had originally infested, for which I'm very thankful. I've not dosed Tech M in many months, and I don't test magnesium very often. I use Reef Crystals salt, so I'm guessing my mag is around 1200-1300ppm. I can run a test tonight maybe.

I'm giving this a shot... Mg at 1400 and rising with Tech M

I'm also using Polyp Labs Reef-resh at the same time, hoping that the bacteria and carbon treatment use up the extra nutrients from the Bryopsis die off to help keep it from coming back

:crossed fingers:

Well it's been about 3-4months and I didn't see any decline in my bryopsis. Did a 20gal water change (my monthly amount), changed my p04 media and found a leak in my po4 reactor about 3-5days later. Changed reactors and media again. Also I've been turkey basting the HECK out of my rock and using my tunze 6100 to blow off all the stuff on my rocks about every other day. My skimmer has been putting out way more and extra nasty stuff. My bryopsis is vanishing now. I'm not sure if it is the Mg or blowing everything off. Either way I'm happy and will continue to do it.

Skim out all those nasty nutrients.

I have raised my mg level with Tech-m and Epsom salt to over 1600 and have seen no results on the Bryopsis. It started to bubble but not die.

Any idea why i have no results? I run a skimmer, phosphate reactor, and i drip Kalkwasser.

Should I cut down on the lights? I run MH's and VHO actinics. I have a sump with Chaeto and other macros

225 gal tank
zero nitrate and phosphate
alk 11 - a little high
ph - 8.2
calcium 420
sg - 1025

all tests salifert except red sea for mg.

I'd try reducing your magnesium via water changes, then boosting solely with Tech M. In my experience, epsom salt doesn't work :(.

For me I needed to raise the magnesium to over 1800. I started dosing using the Mag Flake/Epson salt recipe and raised it to 1500 and then used Tech-M to around 1800 before I noticed any die-off.

what finally got rid of it for me was adding a phosban reactor, fuge and foxface rabbit, manually removed one last time and the foxface took care of the rest in about a week havent seen any since.

Too bad a fox face wont fit in my 36" tank :(

I'm starting to see a bit of die off even at 1400ish... Mg should be at 1500ish after I dose today... I'm shooting for 1600+ I'll hold it there for as long as I have Tech M (might have 6 or so ounces left after I hit 1600, so there is a possibility that I'll get another 1/2 gallon just in case)... I'm also doing several other things to try and help it stay gone...

1.) Dose Tech M to 1600+
2.) Stay on top of Calc and Alk with Two Part
3.) Skim as best as my Remora Pro w/ Mag 3 will do (there is an upgrade in my future when $$ and time allow me to finish my sump)
4.) I've begun dosing Polyp Labs Reef-resh to create an ultra-low nutrient environment (hoping this will use up all the extra nutrients from Bryopsis die off)
5.) Allow all other types of macro algae to grow to also help use nutrients
6.) Manually remove as much of every type of macro algae as possible AFTER the Bryopsis is gone (I have Ulva, Ogo, Sargassum, the blueish stuff that isn't quite Sargassum(= Dictyota I think), Pink Cotton Candy, Valonia, Neomeris, Halimeda and probably several others in there... rocks were COATED in spores apparently)
7.) Pray and preform Voodoo rituals as needed!! (I'll do just about anything to get this demon weed out of my tank!!!)

Good luck to everyone trying to kill this stuff off!!

Keep fighting the good fight :bum:

I just added a sump, phosban reactor, UV, and went from a HOB Bak-Pak to an Aqua C. The filter sock that the drains run into has pulled a lot of junk out of the water (I have to clean it with my garden hose every few days).

I also added about 15 snails and hermits. No change yet, but it's early.

I was looking to add a fish to my tank already - would a foxface get along ok with my yellow tang?

I know a YT can be territorial, but this one is blind in one eye, so he's not all that tough anyway. If a foxface is likely to eat this crap and get along with my other fish, I'll get one.

I haven't heard of much success with Foxface and bryopsis. I tried a rabbitfish without success (forgot what kind, but it wasn't a foxface). I also tried all sorts of snails, sea hares, lettuce nudibranchs and hermits without success. Have you already tried Tech M? If not, why bother with an animal solution that may or (very likely) may not work? Lots of people have had success with Tech M and it's not terribly expensive (depends on tank size).

well I have an update to share with everyone!!!!! I stop using the techm and started to use the Elios magnisium and Bang in just a few days all the bryopis is gone just like that.
just trying to share nothing more....

Do I have bryopsis or something else? Pics included

I posted this in my tank thread, but I don't guess many people are really interested in replying to that thread... it is here , but I wanted to put my pictures in this thread to see if I can get an opinion

Here are the pictures... Tell me whether you guys think it is Bryopsis, and if it is, should I use the Elevated Magnesium treatment?

The worst spot of it is in that first picture, on a piece of Marshall's Island rock I have... It is the only one in there, and has never been able to grow any coralline, so that is where NA usually starts

Thanks,
Nathan

It scrubs off pretty easily with a toothbrush, but even then there will still be some left... Also, if you scrub it down, it will come back... The only strange thing to me is that it will only grow to the lengths you see (so far)... Now, I call it strange, because I have never dealt with it... It may actually be typical
That's why I am hoping you guys can give some clues

Its hard to tell from the pics. Does it have a "feathery" end to it?

[edit] Looking again I don't think its bryopsis, but if it has the feathery end that just isn't showing up in the pic then it probably is.
