Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

Tech-M working for some but not others...perhaps there is some other variable, maybe a type of filter media in use, that is causing the disparity in results. I have it in my JBJ 28, spreading the past month. Tank is 1 year old. I'm about to start the Tech-M treatment. I hope it works for me. Bryopsis caused me to break down a 65 and turn it into a Trigger tank. I don't want to tear down my cube. I hate Bryopsis.

Tech-m worked great on my bryopsis. I dosed 100ml per day for 2 weeks and it all vanished, most was gone after week one.

Kept running zeo reactor and activated carbon in a reactor during dosing weeks.

Timoweb,

Did you monitor your mag level while dosing that much every day for two weeks? I just now reached 1600 and plan on adding just enough every day to keep it there.

How much is "that much" depends on your tank size... I'm dosing 180 ml/day, and that just barely raises the Mg 18mg per dose... It may take a while to get to 1600mg/L.

Yes it went from 1250 to 1400 on a 400ltr tank. I think it might have gone over 1400 at one point then came down to 1400 as I did a 25ltr water change as soon as it had all gone.

15 days between :D

The pictures on this thread are just breathtaking. Some beautiful tanks just over run with bryopsis, and then to see it all gone. It's like liposuction for your tank ;)

hi all, just thought i'll tag along on this thread. i've been battling bryopsis for a long time too in my frag tank.

once a week i used to take out all the frag plugs just to pluck out the chunk of bryopsis that are choking the zoa frags. and because i've been disturbing the frags so frequently, they have been growing really slowly.

after reading this thread, i decided to try it out. i started dosing another magnesium additive (aquaz, local brand) that i have always been using and after dosing the whole bottle, nothing happened.

then i went out and bought the kent marine tech m and started raising my mg lvls gradually. once mg lvl was raised to 1500, the bryopsis all turned translucent the next day!

however the snails in the tank doesn't seem to want to touch the translucent bryopsis.. so if they are left alone would the translucent bryopsis just rot away?

during this period, some of my zoa colors faded or started becoming brown and it might have been because i raised mg too quickily. i've seen my friend's zoa/sps tank bleached out after she accidently raised it by 400ppm 1 night.

i also have a few strands of residual chaetos in the tank and they were all not affected.

during this period of time i also started dosing vit c agressively as i was trying to save some melting frags that i had bought from a friend. i suspect i had overdosed for the tank volume as the water started become chalky (bacteria bloom).

i just did a water change and cleaned out the tank walls. will try and take some photos and upload soon. yay! its finally gone!! (i hope)

For those that did not see a reduction in the Bryopsis I found that after reading the RF thrad it was discussed to ohold the MG levels at 1500-1600 for 3 months?

Raise your mg level ( try NOT to use Mg sulfate = epson salts) to approx. 1500 to 1600 and hold it thier for about 3 months. you should see a slight increase in the plants mass initically, but then it will begin to dissolve away. And yes it will play a little havoc with your alk for the time but should be an easy fix once you are done

I finally just got my MG levles to about 1600 maybe a bit more. Will hold here untill I seea change or reduction on the algae. Just thought I would share that to those that were not successful after only a few days. As I learned long ago all good results take time nothing is overnight with this hobby.

This is a great thread it is interesting to see the different reactions that can take place when we start messing with the water chemistry. I,ll have to tell some friends about this trick.

I just bought a used tank, and they had a bryopsis problem. It's been sitting for about a month and I've tried to clean it the best I could.

Can bryopsis regenerate from spores in the tank?

I think a spore of this stuff from pre-historic days could regenerate itself!

I would bleach eveything!

Then throw it in an autoclave.....

j/k.

To this day, i had only heard of this thread....its nice to finally be able to read it :)

Has anyone bought a new 128oz bottle of TechM lately? The new ingredients list is only Magnesium Sulfate and Magnesium Chloride, compared to the old list of a dozen or more 'trace' elements. It will be interesting to see if this new bottle has the same effect as the original stuff. Will take about a week to get my Mg up around 1700, so time will tell...

My Bryopsis has stopped growing and seems to be having a real hard time now for the last three weeks. I've done serveral changes around the tank and one of them is Vodka dozing. Now I'd like to know if other reefers can link these two togeather.
