Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

I just searched out this thread because I wanted to ask if anyone has noticed adverse effects to sps with elevated Mg?

I am doing the antibryopsiskentMattack and I have 3 sps colonies that are bleaching. This happened last time I did the tech m but my kh was low then and I blamed that on the problem. This time my Kh is 10.6. My entire colony of green digi is going stark white. Same with my porites and my purple rim cap....same exact corals that suffered last time.

Oh And my bryopsis hasnt even blinked this time :thumbdown: maybe its too early to tell but I am reluctant to continue the techm with my corals not liking it.

I have several SPS in my tank that gave no response (good or bad) to the Tech M. I even had some dying montipora colonies survive it-- they were in horrid decline LONG before I ever upped my magnesium but they stopped dying about the time I started the mag treatments (total coincidence, the mag probably had nothing to do with the turnaround).


I have green and regular birds nest, green mille and teal blue mille, red monti cap, purple "idaho grape" monti, elkhorn monti, cactus pavona, and yellow turbinara.


I did lose an orange/pink frogspawn that I am certain died because of the Tech M/magnesium. It closed up the day I started and never opened up again. I recently totally rotted after staying alive for several months but never opening up.
 
hmmmm. I just put in a fresh batch of phoslock too. Maybe the combination of sudden absence of PO4 and the addition of TechM is causing it. I cant remember if I did this combo last time. Ya know I probably did because PO4 reduction is always my first line of defense.

I also just checked my Mg with salifert and it read right at 1500. Thought it was higher than that. Maybe Ill slowly continue the techM with fingers crossed. I did try the syringe with super heated techM directly on the vile weed. We'll see how it likes that!
 
great info! having trouble with the bryopsis just like all the others here, going to try the same method of increasing the levels of Mg tomorrow, I hope this works fast since I have guests coming for xmas, need the tank looking fab!

How did the super heated TechM go? Kill it instantly?
 
Jbird, I personally suspect that the agent that kills the bryopsis may deplete, degrade, or otherwise reduce in the water quicker than we realize. Smaller daily doses may well be the best bet here for a long-term warfare.

There have been people here that report the same effect after raising their mag a little at a time, whereas some folks like me just piled in a bunch of stuff over a 3-4 day period, only to have it return.


Once I get my magnesium levels to something sane through water changes, I'm going to try the Tech M again, but this time I'm only going to add 25 to 50ppm per day and just raise it a touch every day until I see something happen, and from then on just add a trifle of it.
 
I have been bringing it up relatively slowly. Heres the interesting thing, I raaised it to 1500 with techM and I ran out of the stuff. I have a gallon jug of BRS magnesium and am continuing to bring it up with that. I need to test tomorrow but Im guessing Im in the 1650-1670 range now, and my bryopsis is looking VERY whimpy now. It hasnt turned white yet but it looks very thin hairlike now and seems to be receeding. Its shorter and taking up less real estate. I had some real annoying filaments of bryopsis growing within my ORA green birdsnest. That is gone now or at least receeded below the coral heads. I'll report back and let you know if I claim victory in this battle of man versus- @#$%^&*^%$!!!!
 
Hopefully the BRS magnesium you have will have the same impurity that Tech M does. If not, you'll just be raising mag with no effect on the bryo. I've raised it to over 2200 before with BRS mag chloride to absolutely no effect. Then you'll need to do a huge water change to get the mag down so you can use the Tech M again.

One problem I have detected from dosing the MG to higher levels. I am starting to lose Mexican Turbo Snails... they can't seem to hold onto the glass and drop to the sand... are Turbos and other snails sensitive to high MG levels?

Another satisfied customer hear. Stumbled onto this thread a couple weeks ago. ordered my Kent M and gradually raised my MG level to around 1500. Bryopsis died off completely by the middle of the following week... now I have to tackle the bubble algae... I think the raised Mg might be slowing that down too though.. thanks to all the folks posting here.

My experience also. I had a couple indonesian and mexican turbos that basically sat in the same spot for several days after I raised the mag to it's highest level.

Strangely none died. A did a water change after I noticed they hadn't moved for days, and they perked back up.

That's encouraging... I am about two days into the Tech M treatment (big tank) and don't see any response on the byropsis (except it seems to be coming off in clumps in the closed loop flow). It isn't bleaching out yet... Fingers crossed.

Hi,

Here in Brazil we are trying a different method to kill the damn bryopsis: turn off the calcium reactor.

Some guys here have success doing that. I have ordered kent M but it is hard to pass customs.

I have shut down my CO2 last week and it seems to have a little effect so far. Some report that it take a full month or more to kill it.

In past I was free of them using MgCl and MgSO4 reaching 1800. But it came back as strong as ever ....

Some of you that have a huge calcium reactor with lots of CO2 circulating may try this too. Maybe they realy love CO2 .....
