Finally I'm making a thread in the large tank forum 180g

For many years I have admired the tanks in this section of RC, in June I finally got part of the way there picking up a used 180g tank. It's an upgrade for my old 112 gallon tank. I got the tank for like $200 had a hell of a time getting it down my stairs and an even harder time getting it on my stand. Unfortunately there are tons of slight scratches on it which I didn't notice since the front was covered in coraline. I probably would have bought it anyway as the price was right, I had an achillies in QT and plan to eventually move and have a tank built to the size of the room. Not necessarily massive, massive but maybe 300 gallons or so. That is still a few years off, but for now I have this "big" tank to play with.

I'm running 1 kessil a350w one a360w and a par 38 in the middle. I will eventually replace it with a 360we but instead purchased a box of corals and fish on boxing day yesterday. It's been a while since I lined up at the reef shops. I used to do it every time they had new shipments 7 or 8 years ago. These days there are a million more shops, a billion more frags and less time on my hands.

This tank like all of my tanks never really has a set plan. It's a mixed reef with everything from some leathers to dendros & rhyzo, acans, zoos and palys and acros and montis. Instead of succeeding in keeping one type of coral, I will aim for mixed results with everything.

Fish are : Chevron tang (from 2007 or 2008), Naked Clownfish (from 2006) as well as some newer guys: a mated pair of bangaii cardinals, a leopard wrasse that is about 4 years old. Achilles tang which I have always wanted and the reason I had to get this tank. As well as some yellow tail chromis I previously kept in another tank. Currently in QT I have a Naso tang which will be the last big fish and assures me of getting a bigger reef tank when he gets huge. I would like to add more wrasses in the future as I once had a pretty impressive collection of them including Lineatus, Labouti, Rhomboid, Flame ect. I miss them dearly.

Other equipment is jeabo powerheads, my old trusty ATI Bubblemaster 250 skimmer. I've had this thing since it came out, I've replaced the pumps twice but still love it. Assuming I do get the 300 gallon tank I'd be pretty comfortable still using this skimmer.

Japanese Leather coral, I waited 90 minutes to pay for on boxing day. Longest lineup ever at a reef shop.

I will post some more photos tomorrow or in the coming days. I took a ton, only a few came out. In addition I will photograph my other tanks. 2 gallon pico about to enter its 5th calender year. My 90 gallon garden eel tank, which previously held Octopus and before that dwarf cuttlefish. I currently have a turtle in my old 112 gallon but once I relocate her to a stock tank I will be making it another theme tank. None of these systems are plumbed together as I have had disasters in the past and don't want to risk losing it all in one shot. A little more work a lot more security.

It's been many years since he was bright orange but still love the Chevron tang. For a while he beat up the Achilles but they have been okay for some time.

These Dendros have been pretty much open since I got them. I couldn't believe how much they opened up in the bag on the way home. Of course they do close every day for brief periods but they are often this big. I just added some black sun coral near them and have started to target feed them during the day to get them peeking out.

I have a lot of blue sponge growing on my rocks, and lots of other sponge for that matter, unfortunately lots of algae too.

This is an interesting colt coral. I've never seen one quite this colour. The blue does seem to be somewhat fading but it's still a nice colour. When I initially saw a macro photo of it I suspected it was blue cestipularia but once I saw the actual coral knew better.

I love the mixed reef, but I'd really like to find my niche. However after 9 years of reefing I'm not sure I will ever have a ___ dominated tank. This tank should be up and running another 18 months to 2 years. After that I will move to a house I plan on remaining at for a long long time and will do the final upgrade. By then I hope to have a solid plan.

The picture of the Achilles is amazing

Thanks, just a lucky shot.

Another boxing day score, nice big colony with lots of polyp extension. Probably going to have more sps in this tank then I've ever had in the past.

I used to be really really into the acans, but had many problems with them. Brown jelly many years ago wiped out some massive and expensive colonies. Now under LED's I seem to have more trouble keeping them happy. I removed more than a few frags from the tank. The just didn't puff up and slowly receded. One I couldn't remove basically wasted away but is now growing back. With that being the case I added this frag from my frag tank about 2-3 weeks ago and it has been doing fine. Hopefully that will remain the case and I will add some more. Black suncoral behind it which I am going to attempt to train to open a bit during the day. So far it's only partially opened but I haven't been checking it too late.

Rhyzo after being fed. Maybe my favorite coral, but I don't think I'd want an NPS dominated tank this size.

Just a $5 acro frag that was brown when I got it that has started to encrust and colour up nicely.

Finally my mess of a garden eel tank that sits to the left of the 180 :

There are 5 garden eels in the tank, plus a mandarin and a firefish. The chromis in my 180 used to be in this tank. Eventually I will prune the massive macro that completely covers the live rock. I took the chromis out because I would like to try seahorses with the eels. Cyano is due to the fact there aren't enough fish in the tank to eat the leftover food and the T5 bulbs over the tank are old as hell. No corals although one day I may put some leathers or something like that in. The macro mess makes it easy to keep the mandarin well fed plus the eels only eat what passes over them so they need lots of food. This tank is separately plumbed with its own sump / skimmer and I treat it as a fish only not worrying too much about water quality. I usually use the old 180 water to do water changes in the 90. Unlike the 90 which is a used scratched tank the 90 is a nice custom 36x24x24 starfire front. One day it will sit beside a nice custom big tank.

To the right of the tank is my old 112 gallon not pictured which currently houses a red ear slider I have no hope in hell of rehoming. I actually have a 120 gallon for 2 turtles but after many years together they no longer tolerate each other thus the one in here. In the coming weeks I plan on picking up a stock tank for her, and she can live out her remaining decades in there unless I find someone willing to take her. At which time the 112 will likely become a predator setup. I have extra live rock and would like to try a big eel, or perhaps a lionfish. Still undecided. I even considered a fresh water tank which I've never had less the turtles but it will almost certainly stay marine. Something low cost though so no SPS dominated tank. The end result will be a reef wall measuring about 16 feet. With the 3 foot, 6 foot and 5 foot tanks all lined up along the wall with about a foot between them. There is actually another 20g further down the wall which I'm using as a second QT as I bought a couple of fish already having something in my 55qt tank.

Finally the only tank I've ever had in almost 10 years of reefing that I'm truly happy with is my 2 gallon pico tank. This tank has just entered its 5th calender year and has been running for more than 4 and a half years. The mini carpet anemones eat fish so I stopped trying little gobies, but several of the corals in here have been in there the full 4 years and the gsp has produced countless dozens of frags and a larger colony then what's actually in the tank.

I'm having some trouble with some LPS in my 180. Goniastrea specifically, but not favias, as well as trachyphyllia. In both cases they shrivel up very quickly say in 3 days and never expand again. Initially I had the same problem with Acans almost slowly melting but not actually melting just reseeding until they die. However they did not completely die. One frag that I was unable to remove has started to grow back after a couple of months.

All corals seem to do fine in my frag tank which has an old old 250w xm 20k bulb. I usually put them back in indirect light and slowly get them back not directly under the light but under more light so they can regain their colour after they regain their puffiness. I have not tested frag tank water but it should be very similar to display since I use reef crystals to change both.

I haven't tested nitrate or phosphate lately but don't have any algae issues. SPS have nice polyp extension and other LPS like Elegance and hammer / torch corals are fine.

When in doubt test everything in both tanks. If you can, get your hands on a PAR meter. Also, check at night for pests that might be attacking your LPS.

Can you take a video of the Main DT. I am curious how the flow is looking/working.

Admiring and wanting to know more, sorry. LOL
