For many years I have admired the tanks in this section of RC, in June I finally got part of the way there picking up a used 180g tank. It's an upgrade for my old 112 gallon tank. I got the tank for like $200 had a hell of a time getting it down my stairs and an even harder time getting it on my stand. Unfortunately there are tons of slight scratches on it which I didn't notice since the front was covered in coraline. I probably would have bought it anyway as the price was right, I had an achillies in QT and plan to eventually move and have a tank built to the size of the room. Not necessarily massive, massive but maybe 300 gallons or so. That is still a few years off, but for now I have this "big" tank to play with.
I'm running 1 kessil a350w one a360w and a par 38 in the middle. I will eventually replace it with a 360we but instead purchased a box of corals and fish on boxing day yesterday. It's been a while since I lined up at the reef shops. I used to do it every time they had new shipments 7 or 8 years ago. These days there are a million more shops, a billion more frags and less time on my hands.
This tank like all of my tanks never really has a set plan. It's a mixed reef with everything from some leathers to dendros & rhyzo, acans, zoos and palys and acros and montis. Instead of succeeding in keeping one type of coral, I will aim for mixed results with everything.
Fish are : Chevron tang (from 2007 or 2008), Naked Clownfish (from 2006) as well as some newer guys: a mated pair of bangaii cardinals, a leopard wrasse that is about 4 years old. Achilles tang which I have always wanted and the reason I had to get this tank. As well as some yellow tail chromis I previously kept in another tank. Currently in QT I have a Naso tang which will be the last big fish and assures me of getting a bigger reef tank when he gets huge. I would like to add more wrasses in the future as I once had a pretty impressive collection of them including Lineatus, Labouti, Rhomboid, Flame ect. I miss them dearly.
Other equipment is jeabo powerheads, my old trusty ATI Bubblemaster 250 skimmer. I've had this thing since it came out, I've replaced the pumps twice but still love it. Assuming I do get the 300 gallon tank I'd be pretty comfortable still using this skimmer.
Japanese Leather coral, I waited 90 minutes to pay for on boxing day. Longest lineup ever at a reef shop.
Frag island with the kessil turned on blue only.
Grandis & more Grandis
Rhyzo from the side.
I will post some more photos tomorrow or in the coming days. I took a ton, only a few came out. In addition I will photograph my other tanks. 2 gallon pico about to enter its 5th calender year. My 90 gallon garden eel tank, which previously held Octopus and before that dwarf cuttlefish. I currently have a turtle in my old 112 gallon but once I relocate her to a stock tank I will be making it another theme tank. None of these systems are plumbed together as I have had disasters in the past and don't want to risk losing it all in one shot. A little more work a lot more security.
