Females look just like the males, and there really isn't a way to tell them apart. As far as obtaining a pair and breeding them, I'll leave that up to Dr. Marini.

I have a pair and the female is only about 1/2 inch longer than the male is. The only reason I know which one is the female and male is because the female is pregnant. When only one is out; it is very hard to tell which one is which. The stores here get both sexes. They don't know if its a male or female. I think its strange that yours only gets females. None of the stores here can tell me what the sex is.
I have heard of people going down and buying more than one and hoping that two of them will pair up. The other way I've heard is to go and watch a group and try to pick out the two that seem to stay together.
I have not found any one that has successfully bred the firefish.

thanks
they told me that they ship always males and its very rare to find a female in the order.

They don't know what they are talking about ;)

They are not sexable and notoriously hard to pair off.Typically a nice pair at the lfs become murderers after some days in your tank.Watch for jump outs.
