My only worry with a barebottom tank would be if your bottom is highly reflective - they can be very easily startled.
With a highly reflective bottom, I would be concerned they would be even more likely to jump.
That's pure speculation, but I would still be concerned. I've kept them in bare-bottom blue acrylic tanks and black/gray Rubbermade tubs without issue. They also did just fine for short-term holding in plastic betta or deli cups.
They should do just fine in most bare bottom tanks.
i have 2 that are not a male/female pair. I just picked out 2 random firefish at my lfs and they are together all the time (of course there is a slight chance that they are a m/f pair). they do get startled easily and have jumped out when i am doing water changes.
