First BC 29

So i just had to touch the green stuff.... Ya ya i know right, anyway its hard and feels like its part of the rock and its starting to get darker in the middle of the spots.

If you can scrape it off easily, its algae. If you have to pick at it to get to come loose, it very well could be green coraline.

I had the same thing in my tank. It is probably algae. Your tank will look a lot worse before it gets better. It is completely normal so just be patient. Honestly it takes a year or so before you begging to understand the personality of your tank, learn to care for it, and for all the phases of the filtration process to work its self out.

After 10 years of doing this, I still feel like I don't know anything, but the best advice I could give is:

"BE PATIENT"

I'd say 50~60% of my sand and rocks are covered in detritus right now. I noticed some more green starting around the tank now to, none of it is on the sand just rocks. I try to take a good look every few days to scope things out. I'm taking my time and keeping a close eye on everything. I've learned a lot in the 4 weeks its been running and know I still don't know beans. Looking forward to learning more about the secrets the tank has in store for me good or bad. I apprentice you guys with the vast knowledge you have shared.

So did a 50% water change and added 2 turbo snails and 2 red, 1 blue legged hermits. They are happy and munching down. Nitrates dropped to 5.

If it were me, at the end of your cycle, I would have done 100% water change. It would drop your nitrates to 0, and started you off in the right direction. Just remember, the beneficial bacteria we are growing during the cycle, live on/in your rocks and sand, not the water.

Looking good so far, just don't go crazy and stock it with fish to fast.

Thanks Homer, I was going to do a 50% then every week a 25% for a 100% in 2 weeks. I'm not planning on adding anything for at least 2 weeks. Next was a few more hermits and a shrimp. Fish was on the books for 2 months from now.

Just remember the least murderous of the hermits is the red leg ones, and the only crabs I would put in my reef. All the others will murder your snails for the shells even if you offer them larger empty shells.

OOh just an FYI.....

The API kits is exactly the same chemicals for fresh as they are for salt(the fresh kit is way cheaper). The only difference is the color cards are slightly different hues of the same colors. The only reason I know this, early on I went to go buy separate ammonia, nitrite and nitrate kits from API. On the box the 3 separate kits all say fresh or salt and the only difference is the 2 different color charts which are just slightly different hues of the same colors.

I'm currently cycling my 80G system and using the API master freshwater kit for the cycle.

So after my stock pumped case failed I got a MJ 1200 and I think its got way more GPH rating cus now my overflow can't handle the water, its going into the long holes along the top in chamber 2 now. What should I do if anything.

So the hermits made short work of the green algae, not much left lol. The smallest hermit has the biggest attitude, they all have some funny personalities. The turbo snails cleaned my back plastic for me to, very nice of them. Nothing is touching the sand, guess I need some Nassarius Snails.

So with my first hermits and snails added what is my next level I should be headed for? I can't tell if I have micro bubbles or floaters flying around the tank. Filter floss is dirty and replaced every 2 days. Can't tell if the water is not clear or its the glass.

Added some more snails and a cleaner shrimp.

Test showed no ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and PH at 7.8, salt 1.025, temps stable at 77.5 to 78.5

2 cerith 2 nassarius and a cleaner shrimp.
