First Ponies! Sooo Excited!

Yesterday i was home sick from school so i started doing maintinence on my soon to be Reef, Pony, and Pipe tank. I just added a few cardinalfish a week or two ago that are doing great! So after testing the water, making sure everything is fine i asked my dad if he could order me a pair of ponies. He said YEEEEEEESSSSSSSS! They are a mated pair of H. Reidi! So today i'm home sick again (Dang Crohn's Disease!) and the store called and they're coming tomorrow afternoon right when i come home from school! Sooo Excited! Cant wait until they get here, get acclimated, finish in quarantine so i can get them in the main tank!
Any suggestions for a first timer? These ponies have never been in a tank with any substrate or live rock so i'm a little wary about what they will do after quarantine. Any help in that area?

Hope to post picks soon and start breeding them!

Wish mwe luck:D

don't get too discouraged...breeding reidi is easy, but with the exception of H. ingens, they are the hardest species to rear successfully. reidi fry are pelagic, and on the smaller side as far as SH fry go. hopefully, you didn't pay extra for a "mated pair" as a M and F SH will likely mate, nor do SH mate for life as was once believed.

remember that even tropical species of SH should be kept below 74*F as SH are very prone to bacterial infections, and lower temps = lower bacterial count in the system.

as for keeping pipes and SH together, be aware that mixing Syngnathids is a hit or miss thing. many species carry pathogens that they are immune to, but may infect and kill another species. this is especially true if you mix CB and WC specimens, which if you live in the US, the pipes will be WC. you didn't mention whether or not the SH are CB or not.

just a few things to consider and will hopefully help insure your success w/SH.

The horses are CB and i didn't pay for a mated pair. i figured they would pair off naturally like you said. Would a UV sterilizer help because i have one of them in my main tank? i lowered the temp. in the main tank to 74 the day i got them. They are in quarantine right now but hope to get them in the tank soon! They are feeding great Now. The first time feeding the male refused food but now he is vacuuming the bottom of the tank! I didn't think ponies did that> I am well aware that Reidi fry are very difficult to rear and i understand the basic requirements of the fry. i am going to make a DIY kreisel tank so i think i will be ok with part of the process! After reading your post about mixing syngnathids i decided that i'm going to do something i've never done before! I'm going to quarantine all the fish that go into the tank. THANKS for the heads up!

Going to get pictures of them soon if i could just finish recharging my camera battery!

HOPEFULLY EXPECT PICTURES TOMORROW!

Good luck with your first SH tank. I myself just took your same endeavor. I just started up a SH tank out of my old nano 24gal. Just got them 4 days ago and they're already eating frozen mysis! Hope your do well!

Sorry for the lack of pics! I've been bedridden with a sinus and ear infection! Also i cant find my camera charger!

SORRY for letting everyone down=(

HOPE to get pics sometime this week=)

AWESOME Tank! I really like the seahorse decor on the cabinet.
Is that a real gorgonian? If so great job because i never have any luck with them!

Good Luck

Yea the gorgonians are real I got one orange and one purple so far. I plan on getting some other colors soon after I add my ponys.

Yea the gorgonians are real I got one orange and one purple so far. I plan on getting some other colors soon after I add my ponys. Lets see some pics of your ponys and I would also like to see your cuttlefish and octopus tank. I had a octo for a while a few years ago it was awesome!

Sorry for no pics! I dont want to photograph the tank right now because its a real disaster: Its covered with algae! Also my computer isnt acting very compatable with my cameras memory chip so i have to work that out! The real bad Knews is my octo passed a year ago and my cuttle inked in the tank and asphyated itself because the skimmer was malfunctioning! MAN i have terrible luck with tanks! Keep looking back for pics because i'm determined to show them off!

PS: THE MALE IS PREGNANT!
